Additional details about some of our Service Projects

Bethany House of Northern Virginia (BHNV)

Provides temporary shelter for battered and abused spouses, and their children, who find themselves in homeless and destitute circumstances. BHNV seeks to help clients regain their health and dignity and become responsible and participating members of the community.

Bland Music Competition

The Lions James A. Bland Music Competition is unique to Virginia State and is available to serious classical instrumentalist and vocalists of high-school age and occasionally below high-school age.   The intent of the competition is to: at a minimum recognize the efforts of serious musical students; and at best reward them with cash prizes and/or scholarships.  Local Lions Clubs sponsor the competition.  And competition winners move through the various levels to the Bland State Competition, which is held in May at the Lions of Virginia State Convention.

Canine Companions for Independence (CCI)

Just as “Leader Dogs for the Blind” assist sight disabled individuals, Canine Companions for Independence assist individuals that are physically disabled or hearing disabled.  Additionally they provide dogs to assist trained professionals to help with their patients.

·         Service Dogs: Used to assist individuals that are physically disabled.  For example individuals that have multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, or spinal-cord injuries.  These dogs are trained to perform physical tasks such as pulling a wheelchair, retrieving dropped objects, opening doors and drawers and flipping switches for lights.

·         Hearing Dogs:   They alert hearing disabled individuals to sirens, door knocks, smoke-alarms, and other every day events.  The best example of a hearing-dog in operation is PAX’s TV series “Sue Thomas F.B.Eye”.

·         Skilled Companion Team and Facility Team: Is a combination of trained dog and trained professional used to assist patients.

The above description is my extraction and interpretation of what I found on the CCI Website.  Please look at the CCI Website for correct terminology and information.

Old Dominion Eye Foundation (original known as Old Dominion Eye Bank)

One of the primary purposes is to encourage individuals, along with their family’s acceptance, to donate their organs after death.  All organ donations can be used for transplant, research, or training.

Peace Poster Contest

Is intended for student graphic artists that are of ages 11 through 13 by November 15.  And the intent of the contest is to: at a minimum recognize the efforts of serious graphic artist students; and at best reward them with cash prizes and/or additional recognition.  Each year students are given a theme to artistically express without any words.

Local Lions’ sponsor the event in cooperation with one or more local schools.  Our club sponsors Holmes Middle School.  While our club has sponsored this contest, in two separate years we had students that were able to win at the state level and advance to Lions Clubs International.

Recording Services for the Visually Impaired (RSVI)

This volunteer service is provided for individuals with print impaired, dyslexic, learning disabled, or visually impaired.  The below information was provided by RSVI.

Our truly dedicated volunteers create, from books or other written information, audio recordings (tapes).   Amazingly some of the volunteers can verbally describe figures and pictures to enable a visually impaired customer to understand the information presented in a visually/ graphically oriented format.

Although the majority of our customers are high school and college students, we also enjoy reading for individuals who just want material read onto tape that they can not read for themselves. We are attempting to reach out to people who have lost their sight later in life.

Currently, we have received a grant to begin limited production of books on CD. But this process is still being developed.

Resurrection Children’s Center

This organization helps educate young children with disabilities.  As extracted from their brochure:

“Our model inclusion preschool offers speech and language and occupational therapy services for children with disabilities, scholarships to low-income families, a crisis hot line for families, and monthly parent education programs.”

Sight & Hearing Mobile Screening Van (of District 24-A)

In cooperation with clubs in the district, we created and maintain two vans for sight and hearing screening.  This service is free at scheduled locations throughout the district.  Each van is an RV, specifically modified for testing vision, glaucoma, and hearing.  Based upon our findings, we may recommend that the individual seek follow-up medical attention.

Special Needs Equipment

This service is provided for individuals or families that cannot afford to purchase the items shown below.    All items provided are loaned and returnable, when no further use to the individual.

Some of the items provided are:

  • .Braille-n-Speak  A hand-held PC based device that can record, via microphone, and contains a Braille keypad to control the PC and enter notes.   Trained individuals are truly amazing.  We have heard a high-school student, via the key-pad select various lessons and understand a high-speed playback.  This individual joked that her sighted friends would ask her about the next day’s homework assignment or her class notes.
  • Assistance with Macular Degeneration or other visually impairment.  There are number of items that basically allow an individual with partial vision to operate in a more independent manner.  An example of one these devices, contains: a TV camera and monitor (color or BW) which includes zoom,  a book stage,  and  controls that allow one to zoom and rotate the screen to 90 degrees.  Rotating 90 degrees is useful if the individual must be on their side during bed rest.  Another feature is that an individual can move the camera and examine their feet, which is necessary with an individual that has diabetes.  Impairment or loss of vision is a common result in diabetics, if not treated early.
  • Other items, include wheelchairs and other technical support.

Spinoza Buddy Bear

This is intended to emotionally help infants and children with life-threatening physical problems.  What it is, is a cuddly bear that can ‘talk’ and provides emotional support, before, during, and after a hospital stay.
