Whether picking up trash along US 301, cutting grass at the Ashcake Rescue Squad, or cooking Brunswick stew at our new building at the Atlee Little League field to help raise money for community service projects, Atlee Ruritan Club is moving forward quietly with a great group of men and women working to serve their Hanover community.

WHAT IS RURITAN?

Ruritan, as an organization, has been working to build better communities since May 21, 1928. Two Virginians recognized a need for an organization where community leaders could meet and discuss ways to improve their community. Their early ideas grew to what is now a national organization centered around 3 major missions: Fellowship, Goodwill and Community Service.

Atlee Ruritan Club members are concerned neighbors who want to see tangible results from their volunteer work in their community. We are your neighbor, your relative, your co-worker, elected officials, business professionals, government leaders, who all have one thing in common - we care enough to donate a few hours a month to make our community a better place to live for our families.

WHAT DO RURITANS DO?

FELLOWSHIP - COMMUNITY SERVICE - GOODWILL

No organization survives for long without the unity of its members. Ruritans work to build this fellowship by meeting on 4th Monday night each month (except December) for a home cooked dinner to discuss community issues and also enjoy an interesting and entertaining outside program.

Ruritan members are volunteers who give of their time willingly, but also have busy schedules of work and family like you. Our members build lifelong friendships as they work over brunswick stew pots, BBQ chicken pits, or steam crabs for our fund-raising and community events.

Men and women work and discuss the events of the world and once in a while tell a joke or two. Ruritan is caring about your fellow member, your fellow neighbor and his or her family.

We have fun - we recognize our members who volunteer
All while building goodwill and serving our community

Each year we recognize middle school students for their
creative and inspirational projects on Patriotism.

What are Ruritans . . . Ruritans are choosing to make a difference and having fun doing it!

Being able to let our hair down at meetings makes for good Fellowship

COMMUNITY SERVICE

No one is more aware of the issues or needs of a community than people who live in the neighborhoods around Atlee. Ruritan clubs, though organized as part of a national organization, work autonomously in their own communities.

Each club's member monitors surroundings, sees a need and helps design programs and fund raising activities to meet the needs of our neighbors. This local flavor gives club members an opportunity to see their efforts directly. A Ruritan believes the most important benefit of membership is the opportunity to work in fellowship with people who, like them, have a desire to make their communities better places in which to live.

Cooking hotdogs for Pearson's Corner Elementary
Field Day is an "uplifting" experience - Watch out dog!

How would Emril do this?

No words needed . . .

"Sticking" trash on 301 for a couple hours with
the rest of the club on a Saturday morning every
six months is better exercise than a treadmill and
much more interesting!

Monthly dinner meetings are cooked by club volunteers too.
