For the last 50 years, the Brookville Timberlake Lions club has hosted a Chidren's Christmas Party for under privilaged children from the area. To date, we have provided Christmas to over 1540 Children and spent almost $ 100,000.00 on this project. Each year,Lion Al Strobance has provided a winter coat and an outfit (pant and shirt) for each child. Lion Helen Dudley has worked hard to find the children in need and verify that need.

Previously named the "Ruban Mann Childrens Christmas party", the name was changed to the "Davis Ballowe Childrens Christmas" party to honor Davis Ballowe, our only active charter member who along with Lion Charles Arnold founded this annual event. These children are screened for need, and in many cases this is the only Chritmas that they will have.

EYEGLASS AND HEARING AID RE-CYCLING

The Lions clubs collect old glasses and hearing aids that are cleaned, cataloged by prescription and given at no charge to people in need, not only in the US but around the world. Brookville Timberlake Lions provides eye exams and eye glasses to our fellow citizens in need. In the Lions year July 2006 to June 2007, Brookville Timberlake Lions spent $ 3,376.00 in Lynchburg and surounding areas for eye glasses and eye exams. This year's expenditures are going to be the same or more. Please be sure to donate when you see us at our semi annual "White Cane" collection.

VIRGINIA LIONS HEARING FOUNDATION

Located at the UVA Hospital, this orginization funded by Lions, is working on new methods of eliminating hearing loss and deafness. They are doing exciting ne research into the chemicals that make the ear work.

The principal objectives of the Virginia Lions Hearing Foundation are:

• To initiate and support hearing research on deafness and hearing problems in all age groups.

a) Basic Science Research: Ototoxicity (drug damage); Noise Damage; Electrical Stimulation of Auditory Nerves; Regeneration of Hair Cells

b) Clinical Research: Study of temporal bone anatomy and testing of new surgical procedures and/or new implantable devices concerned with ear diseases and hearing disorders.

• To support the Cochlear Implant Program, for the rehabilitation of profound deafness in children and adults.

• To conduct diagnostic clinical examinations, which may result in surgery (eg. cochlear implant) or other rehabilitative procedures (eg. hearing aids) to restore partial or complete hearing to individuals.

• To conduct informational programs to educate the public on hearing disorders and to encourage hearing protection.

• To initiate educational programs for practicing ear surgeons on the latest surgical techniques to better care for the hearing impaired individuals throughout Virginia and beyond.

LEADERDOGS FOR THE BLIND

Our club proudly donates funds to this school, which is funded by Lions from around the world. Leaderdog, located in Rochester Michigan, trains dogs and trains the blind student to work with the dog, giving the person independance and mobility. This is all done with NO COST to the student.

Founded in 1939 by Lions Club members, Charles Nutting, Don Schuur and S.A. Dodge, Leader Dog has successfully matched and graduated over 13,000 person / dog teams since its inception. The dream of these men became vision and independence for thousands.

The dedicated staff at Leader Dog is over 100 strong. The facilities, located on the original 14 acres first purchased by the founders, have morphed from a farm with numerous outbuildings to a superb residence center, a stellar kennel, and well manicured grounds. This complex is home to our students, dogs, all services departments and the support staff that enable Leader Dog to enhance the lives of blind and visually impaired individuals from all over the world.

BROOKVILLE HIGH SCHOOL

Each year, our club gives a scholarship to a worthy student at Brookville High School. The club also donates to the After Grad party each year, and provides the Lions Monthly magazine to the school library.

Trail Clean-up

The Brookville Timberlake Lions clean-up the hiking trail behind Heritage Hight School, in cooperation with the Lynchburg Parks Department.

Are you looking for a way to give back to your community, enjoy the great outdoors, garner additional family time, and stay physically active? The Department of Parks & Recreation sponsors a wonderful program that can fulfill these needs and more. The Adopt-A-Trail program allows both individuals and groups to adopt sections of a trail and contribute to its upkeep and maintenance. It's easy to get started! Lynchburg Parks and Recreation provides all of the training, instruction and equipment you'll need for this exciting and rewarding adventure.

Participants agree to collect litter or provide other maintenance activities (pruning, trimming, staining, etc.) along their section of trail at least twice a year. Adoptions last for one year and are renewable

Lions Area Medical Progect LAMP

Each year, Lions from Brookville Timberlake Lions go to LAMP, held in Wyse County Virginia. This past year, the LAMP project served over 2,500 perople, giving 8,100 medical procedures valued at 1.3 million dollars. Medical professionals provide services at NO CHARGE, while Lions provide food service and other services to the staff and participants. Good, servicable clothing is also provided at no cost to those in need.

Teddy Bears

Members of our club make teddy bears and donate them to area hospitals, to comfort children under going medical procedures. The children keep their bears when the go home. Since we began keeping records in Spring 2006, we have made and donated 896 bears. These have been completed by Brookville-Timberlake Lions Club members and friends. Approximately 700 bears have been delivered to Lynchburg General , 135 to Southside Hospital in Farmville and 71 to Bedford Memorial Hospital. We are excited about the progress of our hospital emergency room bear project. Several members have seen children hugging their Lions Club bears, well after their hospital visit.

Share Baskets

Every month our club provides share baskets to needy families in the area. SHARE is a non-profit program established to encourage and reward volunteers. Brookville-Timberlake Lions Club has participated in this program since February 2005. A basket of food can be purchased for $20.00 plus at least 2 hours of volunteer service each month. This $20.00 basket of food has a retail value of between $35.00-$40.00 if purchased in a local grocery store. Brookville-Timberlake Lions Club has delivered 36 of these food baskets to needy families since the project was begun. Lion Helen Dudley provides the name of a needy family in our service area (Evington area of Campbell County) each month. Lion Helen is very familiar with the needs of these families and goes with Club members to deliver the package. The SHARE program is a “hands on” project for Brookville-Timberlake Lions Club. Delivery of food packages has been carried out by various members with all members having the opportunity of fulfilling our WE SERVE motto in a more meaningful way. In a few words this quality food is available to anyone for $20.00 plus 2 hours of volunteer time.
