Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the PYAC swim team program special?
Our coaching staff develops each swimmer's proficiency in all four competitive strokes by emphasizing proper stroke techniques and age-appropriate training with a positive, friendly and fun atmosphere. We offer all swimmers ample opportunitties to participate regardless of skill level. Both YMCA and USA swim meets are available to PYAC team members during the indoor/short course and outdoor/long course swim seasons, several with little or no travel.

My children participate in other sports and school activities; how does PYAC fit in with these and good grades?
PYAC offers flexible opportunities for swimmers to build on their swimming skills and abilities during the swim season. Many of our swimmers participate in other seasonal sports, such as soccer, baseball or basketball, and in various arts programs. PYAC families find that the continuity of year round swimming provides their children with a great work ethic, friendships and better grades. Studies have shown that children who are more active in sports tend to do better in school and are less likely to have many of the normal teen problems as athletic teams provide support and friendship during key formative years.

Why should we chose YMCA swimming?
The PYAC/Portsmouth YMCA swim team promotes character development by challenging all persons involved in the program to accept and demonstrate the YMCA's core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility.
