Fall Conference 2009:

The Lions of Virginia, District 24C, held it's Fall Conference in Staunton, Va on September 19, 2009. Pictured are Lion Art Marson, director of the International Association of Lions Clubs, Lion Ken Quantock, Region II Zone II Chairperson, Lion Norma Shoemaker, Diistrict Governor and Lion Florann Burnett, President of the Rivanna Lions Club.

Howard W. Kojan Scholarship Winner:

Lion President Florann's first official act was to introduce us to Katherine Rachel Scott, our current scholarship winner, who attended the 7/8 meeting along with her parents.

"Miss Fluvanna" and Charlottesville's "Dogwood Festival Queen" proceeded to tell us of her plans for the future. Til now she had been on the path as a future teacher but recently realized she didn't want to spend the rest of her life in school! With her change in direction to nursing she learned she lacked some required courses. These will be taken care of when she enters Piedmont in September. Completion of these courses will allow her to reapply for their 2-year nursing program.

She is very involved in community service activities and "therapeutic riding" (assisting disabled youth). We definitely expect to see her at one or more of our upcoming events.

Katherine is a lovely, intelligent and poised young woman who left us all feeling we had definitely picked a "winner".

Highway Cleanup:

On Saturday, July 25th eight Rivanna Lions cleaned-up Route 15. This clean-up is one of 4 times a year we help
keep Route 15 eye appealing. The next clean-up is scheduled for November. We are always looking for a few more helping hands.

Lion Jim provides Spudnut donuts at each cleanup and Lion George Bland, so far, continues to retain his title of "Spudnut Champ".
After the next cleanup we plan to include the actual number of donuts eaten.

District 24C Zone Meeting:

We will be having a District 24C Zone Meeting at our club on Wednesday, September 23, 2009. We plan on
hosting several other clubs in the district. We welcome guests anytime. If you plan on attending our meeting,
starting time is 6:30PM. If you wish to eat before our meeting dinner, we meet in the same room, the Faulkner
Room, at 5:15PM. Call Lions Tom/Kathy Whitney at 434-589-4978 by Monday before the meeting date to reserve a dinner seat.

Old Farm Day 2009:

All of Rivanna Lions are marking our calendar for Old Farm Day on October 3, 2009. The Sight And Hearing
Mobile Screening Unit--the SAHMSU has been reserved to help anyone who attends Old Farm Day to be
tested for eye and hearing problems-Lion Gerry Kojan is heading up our group. In addition, Lion George
Bland and his Diabetes Committee will be offering diabetes health information. We look forward to greeting
many people with Rivanna Lion Club information on that day too.

UVA personnel will be on hand to answer individual questions relative to diabetes.
Also, our site will include a box for the collection of used eyeglasses.
Lion Ron will be selling brooms for $10 each.

Membership.......

We have done much since our charter in March 1998. Our bi-monthly dinner meetings allow us to blend social activity with the club's educational and administrative processes. One meeting per month features guest speakers.

We place emphasis on the Lions’ motto “We Serve”, and are centered on the theme that unites us as Fluvanna residents....service to our community.

If you’d like to learn more about this growing service group, or are a relocated Lion, we invite you to attend a meeting. Our meetings are open to the public and the members welcome your questions about their activities and how you can give back to your community through membership.

For more information on membership send us an email using the contact box below. If you would like a personal call, please be sure to include your phone number.
