Old Farm Day

October Newsletter

Old Farm Day

Lion Gerry reported results of SAHMSU. Fifty-seven individuals, age range from under 18 through the 80's, were screened. Of the 57 screened for hearing, 19 were advised to seek professional help as were 11 of the 37 screened for sight and four of the 26 tested for glaucoma. The majority of those referred were 40 or older. This just underlines how valuable are the services offered on SAHMSU at events like Old Farm Day.

Lion George Bland spoke about our diabetes exhibit and said tho the numbers were not as large as previous years, Kimberly Morris, the diabetic nurse from UVA, was kept busy answering questions from the public.

Lion Ron was happy to have sold 6 brooms - more room in his basement! Lion Dave spoke about having membership materials at the upcoming yard sale to promote our club and Lions Karen and Florann collected a total of 31 pair of used eyeglasses - the raffle winner of $25 was Linda Loos.

A total of 19 members worked at OFD on and with SAHSMU; diabetes exhibit; membership; broom sales and eyeglass collection. Each and every member is sincerely thanked for his/her participation in an important community event. Well Done Everyone!

Golf Tournament

Lion Ron had a smile on his face as he summed up results of this event. Due to some pleasant circumstances (reduction in cost of course, high sales of mulligans and raffles) our profit is approximately $3,500! Final figure awaits review by Treasurer, Lion Chris. Good Job All!

Our members excelled in performance: Winning men's team had Lion Chris and winning women's team had Lion Sylvia; longest drive (men) Lion Chris - longest drive (women) Lion Florann. Well Done!!

Thanks to Lion Ron for his hard work and to all those who had a hand in the event. Six left-over raffle items brought to the 10/14 meeting resulted in the following: Lion Bob won a certificate from the "Carving Board"; Lion George Burnett a wheel alignment certificate; Lion Dave a goody-bag from Union Savings (no money included), and Lions Mike, Karen and Ellen each won $10 certificates for Hershey's ice cream from the Country Store.

Lion Ron announced a big change for next year. The tournament will be held in May, on a Sunday afternoon, at 1 pm. Please mark the date, May 23, 2010.

Better Living Yard Sale

Lion Dave reported our share of the sale was over $4400! He thanked all those whose participation in the event made it so successful. Thank you Lion Dave for all your efforts in achieving such an outstanding fundraiser for a second year!

It would be wonderful to count on such an event each year but, unfortunately, life doesn't work that way. Let's each of us start thinking of new and innovative ways to raise the funds we need to accomplish all we want to do!

Program - Bland Music Contest

Lion Charlie Halloway from Charlottesville Host club gave a presentation at the meeting of 10/14 on the steps necessary for our club to get this project started. It involves 8th thru 12th graders with outstanding talent in voice or instruments - recommended by school music teachers, etc. Lion Kingsley, Chair of the committee, will be reporting to us in the future as things move along.

Program - RAM (Remote Area Medical)

The Drs. Weiss gave a most interesting presentation on RAM, of special interest to Lions Florann and George Burnett; Ellen and Bob Keane; Karen and Marshall Norman; Pam, Ron and Jill Whatley, planning to attend next July (22, 23, 24). The event is held each year in Wise, VA., at the County Fairgrounds and provides free medical, dental, optometric, etc., services to those who otherwise go without. It's wonderful for our club to have representation there and we very much look forward to hearing about their experiences next year.

Lion Pam announced that Dr. Vickie Weiss is allowing us use of her 5 reserved rooms and we are grateful for her generosity. Without it, our members might not have been able to attend.

Miscellaneous

10-Year Pin: Lion President Florann presented Lion Fritz with the above. Congratulations!

Holiday Outreach: As approved by membership: Children involved in the "backpack" program will be receiving canned hams for Thanksgiving. Gift cards, in the amounts of $25 and $50 (possibly from the new super Walmart, to total no more than $1,000) will be given to Fluvanna Social Services for distribution to those in need - following the usual Christmas overload from local organizations - for food, clothing, gas, heating purchases, etc.

One meeting in November, December: As in years past, members voted to hold only one meeting each month because of the holidays.

Cleanup of Rte. 15: Lion Jim will report on consumption of Spudnuts and condition of the road, cleaned by members on Saturday, 10/31.

Directory Correction: Please change the email address for the Lions Hocevar to read: mjteh30@gmail.com.

Directory Correction: Please change the email address for the Lions Foster to read:

gsfoster@embarqmail.com

Brooms: We will soon be placing an order for brooms. This is a good thing because it means we are making money. It is not a good thing in that, in order to save on shipping charges, we must place a huge order. This is a good thing because it means we do not have to order often; it is not a good thing because it means we need storage space for all that we order. Lion Ron has been most generous in turning his basement into a broom closet - literally! Let's show our true Lions' spirit and offer some help. Please offer room to store a few boxes - as many as possible. Your name will be mentioned (in BOLD) in this newsletter under "Miscellaneous" - "Broom Storage"

50/50

Lion Mike won $25 on 10/14; Lion Sylvia was the winner of $21 on 10/28. Sadly, neither picked the Ace of Spades, worth $100 at the November meeting.

Lion Mike: 12/10 (B)
