History The first Lions Club was organized in Chicago, IL, in 1917 by a local businessman named Melvin Jones. The Lions organization has grown into the World's largest service organization, the International Association of Lions Clubs, with a membership of more than 1,400,000 men and women in over 40,000 clubs representing 167 countries and geographic units. The Rivanna Lions Club was established in 1998. Our members pledge unselfish service to our community and to those less fortunate than ourselves. Club members volunteer their time and energy to a variety of fund-raising efforts; all of the profits are designated for charitable uses. While we support the programs of the International Association, our primary concern is to serve the local community. In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions at their International Convention and challenged them to become "Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness." Since that time, service to the blind and visually impaired has become one of the association's most significant activities. |
