OLD FARM DAY

 

 

The Rivanna Lions will be offering FREE sight and hearing screening on October 3d at "Old Farm Day" held at Pleasant Grove and open to the public from 10 am-4 pm. This is the 14th year for the event and our sixth appearance. Put on by the Fluvanna Historical Society, it features exhibits and demonstrations reminiscent of the old farm lifestyle. Community groups and vendors are also present. The event attracts approximately 6,000 visitors each year.

 

Rivanna Lion members have been trained to screen both adults of any age and children who are able to read numbers. Children age 16 and under must have parental approval (signature on registration form). Certified Technicians from the club will also be on board to evaluate the findings of the screenings and report the results. Recommendations to consult a professional will be made where necessary.

 

Screenings are done on a specially equipped air-conditioned mobile unit containing 2 hearing booths, 2 sight machines and a glaucoma machine (adults only). The entire process, from completing a short form thru screenings and evaluation takes about 15 minutes. No appointments are necessary.

 

Also on site will be information relative to diabetes. Personnel from UVA will be on hand to answer questions and members will have printed material to distribute.

 

The club will have an area with material covering membership in Lions and the Rivanna club in particular - who they are and what they do. Our Golf Membership chair has information about our upcoming golf tournament, October 10 at Lake Monticello. It's not too late to sign up a team for $240/single player $60. As in the past, Lions' brooms will be available for purchase.

 

A special collection box for used eyeglasses (only those with frames) will be on premises - a prize is involved. Used eyeglasses are prohibited from being sold in the USA but the collection is cleaned, prescriptions read and distribution made free to needy Virginia residents yearly at Wise, VA in July and to third-world countries.
