!Welcome Lions Keane!

Lion Guy installed Ellen and Bob Keane, sponsored by Lion Florann, as the newest Rivanna Lions on 8/22.  Congratulations!    We look forward to working with you on committees and upcoming events.

Member Orientation

An Orientation meeting was held on 8/29. Lions Guy, Wayne and Gerry dispensed information ranging from how Lions came into being all the way to our own club activities.   Thanks to the Lions Foster for hosting this event and to those who took part in a great exchange of questions and answers.

New Fundraiser

Lions Florann and George reported our new special 50/50 raffle is doing well.  However, we need the help of each member to ensure its success.  Once the 100 chances are sold (at $50 per) the resulting $5,000 will be equally divided between the winning number and our club treasury.  Do all you can by promoting sales.  If you have questions or want raffle tickets, please see the above Lions.  Thanks for your support!

Golf Tournament - October 20

Lion Ron has prepared the wood and metal necessary to display hole sponsorships at the event.  What's needed is actual sponsors.  Lion Wayne is in charge of maintaining the list so please be sure to check with him before you actually solicit.  It's important we avoid multiple contacts at the same place of business.  Donated prizes, not necessarily golf related, are most welcome.  A Ford will be given away.  Please see Lion Wayne or Lion Ron for details.

                       Youth Initiative

Lion Marjorie reviewed the many ways members may help at Central Elementary:  Book Buddies, Reading Buddies, Math Olympiad participants, Mentors, etc.  New this year is a program involving nutrition.  Help is needed Friday afternoons and the days before a holiday (from about 1:45 to 2:45) filling bags with non-perishable foods supplied by Blue Ridge Food Bank with funds they received from a BAMA grant.  So little time is required for any of the above.  Let's build on our numbers from last year.  See or contact Lion Marjorie for details.

 Football Raffle

Thanks once again to the generosity of the Lions Foster who donated four UVA tickets each year, Lion Sylvia distributed raffle books for the UVA Wake Forest game scheduled for 11/3.  Individual raffles sell for $1 each; a book of 6 for $5.  Please give sold books and monies to Lion Jim at any time.  This is a great fundraiser for us and is always sold out.  Thanks again Lion Sara and Lion Guy!

Rivanna Lions Palmyra Sign

Lion President Dave announced plans are underway to print and erect two signs indicating club name, meeting place and time, etc.  They will be located within our area but exact spots have not yet been decided.   More as details emerge.

Meals at Meetings

A routine was established some years ago to make meal ordering at the clubhouse as simple as possible for all members.  We are REQUIRED to pay for the number of meals that are called in to the dining room each Monday prior to our Wednesday meetings.  To eliminate multiple unnecessary phone calls, it is assumed that all members plan to attend and have a meal.  Therefore, members who do not wish to eat or expect to be absent for a meeting must call Lion Evlyn, 589-1304, by Sunday of that week so that she has the proper count.  If you do not do so, a bill for the meal will be sent to you.  Please cooperate and make things more simple for everyone.  Thank you!

Upcoming Dates

OLD FARM DAY, Oct. 6:  Technicians, Drivers and Screeners will be needed the entire day (open to the public 10 am thru 4 pm).  Other members are needed for non-technical assistance. A sign-up sheet - indicating 2--hour increments - will be passed around at the 9/12 meeting.  Old Farm Day is an event where we are afforded an opportunity to make ourselves visible within the community in addition to SAHMSU screening. Lions Marcia and George Bland will have a Diabetes Awareness table representing both our club and our District..

Over 4,000 people attend to see the many agricultural and community exhibits, craft vendors, food vendors, even a juried art show, etc.  Help your club and enjoy a day of fun in your own community.  In case of "torrential rain" such as we had last year, there is a rain date of Sunday, October 7. Please be sure to sign up to help.  See Lion Gerry with any questions.

Zone Meeting:  We will host a meeting on 11/14 with our own Lion Kingsley, Zone Chair for 24-C, in charge.  These meetings are held so that clubs may learn what is happening within the District.  Other clubs will send representatives so we expect guests for dinner and socializing that night.  The Zone meeting begins immediately after our regular meeting.  Please remain to attend.   Thank you.

District Governor Marty Stoll:  Our new DG will visit us the first meeting in January, 1/9/08.  Let's have a great attendance!

Miscellaneous

SAHMSU: Screeners will be assisting the Lion Cricket the week of 9/10 thru 9/14, working at five different schools in Louisa and Gordonsville.

Visitation:  Members are encouraged to visit other clubs within or outside our region.  Please see Lion Guy for information (until this job is taken over by another member).  Also, please remember to take a "visitation form" with you (available on our website).

http://www.orgsites.com/va/rivannalions:  When was the last time you signed on to our website?  You're in for a pleasant surprise.  Maintained by our own Webmaster, Lion Chris, this site has tons of information for members and any non-Lions who visit.  It also links to other sites.  You are urged to take a few minutes and see what's happening!

Fun Stuff:  Lion Guy conducted an "auction" at a cost of only $1 per member on 8/22.  The winner was Lion Chris who received, I believe, a container of special cookies.   Do you have an idea for other "fun" doings at meetings?  Please see Lion President Dave or Lion Guy!

50/50

Lion Sylvia won $21 on 8/8.   The winner on 8/25 was Lion Pam who won $30.  The Ace of Spades, still in the deck, is now worth $80!

Bits & Pieces:

This is an area where news about members and families is posted.  You need not wait until your great-grandchild is elected to Congress to have something published.  Email me, call, pass a note, whatever.  Just let me know.  Thanks.

Lion Harry, who has been with us since 2003, attended his last meeting on 8/22 and is wished well by all in his move to Georgia.  Who is taking his place??????

We learned on 8/22 that Lion George Bland has been a Lion since 1979 and Lion Guy since 1980!  The experience these gentlemen bring to the Rivanna Lions goes a long way in making us such a great club.  Thank You!

We are always ready to increase our membership with quality people who will contribute to Lionism and the goals of our club.  Membership is by invitation.   Please see Lion President Dave or our Membership Chair if you have been approached by or know of such individuals.

Upcoming Birthdays/Anniversaries

No birthdays or anniversaries in September.

Editor's Notes:

Please pass on to me any correspondence, pictures, etc. that may be used in our scrapbook.  Then, please give me lots of time to update the book - I have difficulty handling pressure!   Prior years' scrapbooks are available for borrowing at any time.  You need only ask.
