New
Club Year
Lion
President Dave used the gavel on 7/11 to announce the first meeting of year
2007-2008 and spoke of his hopes for his new presidency. He is ready to help in any way with new ideas
and/or suggestions for fund raisers, events or just plain fun doings at
meetings and wants members to feel free to contact him.
He is
currently working on the Directory (see him to confirm/change information) and
will soon have committee sign-up sheets for members' selections.
We're ready
and happy to work with him to make this new club year a great success!
New
Fundraiser
Lions Florann and George described a special 50/50 raffle
to membership that is taking effect immediately. The project had previously been discussed and
voted on by the BOD and will result in $2,500 for our treasury and $2,500 for
the winning number.
100 chances
will be sold at $50 each (a total of $5,000).
Any individual or group of individuals may purchase one or more. The selection date will be when all 100
chances are sold. Lion Florann suggested ways of approaching sales, i.e., as a
means of helping Lions projects or a fun way for friends and/or relatives to
take a chance as a group - with a substantial amount of money as a prize. Lion George began selling chances immediately
following the meeting of 7/11. Please
contact/see him to take part. If each
member takes a ticket or two to sell, we will have no problem reaching our
goal.
Golf
Tournament
Lion Ron
asked for membership information relative to helping out at this event in
October. He also displayed a donated quilt that will be raffled off at the
event. Lion Wayne handed out lists of past golf sponsors. It is hoped members will revisit those
businesses and seek out new ones.
Please see Lion Wayne with information, monies and questions. Lion Ron cautioned members not to begin
soliciting until after August 15 as two other tournaments are scheduled at the
Lake prior to ours. Individuals may also
want to consider being hole sponsors, to commemorate
any event - for whatever reason - signs are part of the deal. Additionally, prizes are awarded to players
following the tournament and Lion Ron is anticipating many donations.
Youth
Initiative
Lion
Marjorie presented a new way for our members to be of help at Central Elementary
this coming school year. Volunteers are
needed Friday afternoons to help fill food bags that students may take home for
the weekend. Watch for more details and
try to help.
Zone
Meeting
Lion
Kingsley, 24-C Zone Chair, announced our club will be hosting a meeting on
November 14. Please mark the date as
members from other clubs will be in attendance and a good showing by our own
members is warranted.
Miscellaneous
Meals at
Meetings: The great waitress who served us so
beautifully and attentively has left to work in the Louisa Library. We’ll miss her pleasant manner and wish her
much luck. Lion President Dave presented
her with a $50 check as a token of our appreciation.
District
Governor Marty Stoll: Our new DG will visit us the first meeting in
January, 1/9/08. Let's have a great
attendance!
Old Farm
Day: Saturday, 10/6, Pleasant Grove. This is another event that allows us to
promote our club and Lionism in general.
Please make note of the date.
SAHMSU drivers, Technicians and Screeners, plus those in training as
Screeners will be needed. Additionally,
non-technical help will be required that day.
An alternate date this year, Sunday Oct. 7, has been reserved in case of
"torrential rain".
More to come.
Diabetes
Awareness: Lion Marcia announced she is stepping down as
Co-Chair of this committee due to commitments as Diabetes Chair of 24-C. Lion George Bland will assume the role of
Chair for our committee. Good luck to
both! FYI, a Diabetes table will be set
up at Old Farm Day.
Mints: Lion Tom W. announced another $117 added to
our account from this great fundraiser.
Well done, Lion Tom.
50/50
Lion Wayne
won $29 on 7/11. The winner on 7/25 was
Lion Tom W. who won $21. The Ace of
Spades, still in the deck, is now worth $65!
Bits
& Pieces:
This is an
area where news about members and families is posted. You need not wait until your great-grandchild
is elected to Congress to have something published. Email me, call, pass
a note, whatever. Just let me know. Thanks.
Lion Harry,
Treasurer, who previously announced plans to move to Georgia once his home was
sold has been real-estate successful and will be leaving us as of
September. He has done an incredible job
these past two years and we applaud his efforts and want him to know he will be
missed!
Sadly, the
BOD learned from Lion Wayne that his house is up for sale and,
when sold, he will be relocating to Silver Spring, MD. His resignation will be a great
loss to the Rivanna Lions. As a Charter
member and a Melvin Jones recipient, Lion Wayne has played a major part in so
many of our activities since the beginning.
Much good luck to him, Vivian and their entire family!
Additionally,
the Lions Mongiello have
indicated their intention to resign due to health reasons. We wish them well.
We are
always ready to increase our membership with quality people who will contribute
to Lionism and the goals of our club.
Membership is by invitation.
Please see Lion President Dave or our Membership Chair if you have been
approached by or know of such individuals.

Editor's
Notes:
Please pass
on to me any correspondence, pictures, etc. that may be used in our
scrapbook. Then, please give me lots of
time to update the book - I have difficulty handling pressure!
It was
brought to my attention that it might be a good idea to archive some
newsletters for others to see what we've been doing. Below you will find links
to previous newsletters to keep everyone up to date. I will post more as I get
them.
