Induction of Officers

PDG Pete Wills of the Gordonsville Lions was on hand at the 6/27 meeting to install officers for the club year 7/1/07-6/30/08.  He praised the activities and fellowship of the Rivanna Lions and made members aware of our good standing in District 24-C.  He also thanked our screeners and technicians for the help we provide to his club relative to their use of SAHMSU and the Gordonsville schools.  Thanks also were extended for our support of Lion Wayne Davis who may turn out to be the first International Director from 24-C.  We appreciate his kind words and officiating with the new BOD.

Before handing over the precious gavel to incoming President Dave, Lion Ken spoke of planned goals while under his leadership these past two years.  Achievements surpassed hopes and he is stepping down proudly.  Much has been accomplished and we thank him for his untiring efforts.  Lion Wayne, on behalf of the club, presented him with a "Certificate of Achievement" and a small gift.

Lion President Dave, in accepting the gavel immediately became aware it's an item which must remain with him at all times. He expressed hope for his presidency and thanked members for their trust and support this coming year.   Congratulations and good luck.

Lion of the Year

The closed ballots collected on 6/13 were tallied and the winner, for the second year in a row, is Lion Jim Frawley.  Congratulations Lion Jim on a well-deserved award.  Your continuous efforts are appreciated by all.

Health Fair

Lions Jim and Gerry reported the results of the event.  All known avenues had been pursued in an effort to increase attendance: the addition of Mozelle Booker on the committee (a prominent member of the black community in Fluvanna); new participants; etc., but the turnout was disappointing.   There were two health fairs in Charlottesville, a fire/rescue/police event by Food Lion and a 5K Run at Laurel Ridge on the same day. SAHMSU requires our reservation at least 6 months in advance for this event and, therefore, does not afford us the luxury of last minute date changes.  Despite all, we were rewarded with stories of individuals being helped - a young woman without insurance desperately in need of a mammogram receiving one quickly; two individuals (one with a sight problem and the other with hearing) were identified on SAHMSU and are pursuing professional help; a young mother who received much-needed information on Diabetes to help her and her family.  We've no way of knowing how many more were helped but should feel confident there were more. As Lions, we should feel confident about fulfilling the motto, "we serve". The committee will meet in the next weeks to go over details and determine if and when another health fair is in our future.  A follow-up report will be made to the BOD.

To ALL who took part, in so many ways with this undertaking, the committee extends its sincerest appreciation!

Miscellaneous

Orientation:  Originally scheduled for 6/23 is being rescheduled to allow for more attendance.  Though geared for new members, everyone is welcome.  Lion Guy will be announcing the new date, time and location.  Please be sure to let him know of your planned attendance.

Thank You Cards:  Lion Sylvia read one from Lion Mike Hocevar in appreciation for the "get-well" gift sent to him.  Lion Wayne read another from the recipient of a hearing aid.

Lightbulbs: The BOD voted to donate the remaining cases of unsold bulbs to MACAA.  Lion Harry and his most generous wife Irma, whose house is currently for sale, thank us all for helping to clear their basement!

Golf Tournament:  Lion Ron showed a great sample sign he made from plywood donated thru Lion President Dave.  He passed around a sign-up sheet for anyone interested in helping with the committee.  Please see him if you missed this opportunity.

Old Farm Day:  Saturday, 10/6, Pleasant Grove.  This is another event that allows us to promote our club and Lionism in general.  Please mark the date, especially those involved with SAHMSU and Diabetes Awareness.

50/50

Lion George Burnett won $32 on 6/13.

He did not pick the Ace of Spades.  Unfortunately, there was no 50/50 on 6/27.

Bits & Pieces:

This is an area where news about members and families is posted.  You need not wait until your great-grandchild is elected to Congress to have something published.  Email me, call, or pass a note, whatever.  Just let me know.  Thanks.

Lion Mike suffered a stroke in late May and is, happily, doing well.  Fortunately, felt up to helping out as a Greeter at the health fair on 6/2.  Thanks for your help and stay well Lion Mike!

Lion Ken read a letter received from Lion Alden Bigelow indicating his resignation.  The BOD will vote to accept his request at the next meeting and he will be removed from the rolls.  He is thanked for his efforts while a Rivanna Lion.
