MISSION STATEMENT

Diabetes Awareness 24-C 2008-2009

Lions of 24-C Our New Diabetes Awareness program is a strong based non-profit organization, established by Lion Marcia Aulebach with the aims of creating Diabetes Awareness of the emerging national epidemic of the new millennium - Diabetes among the general population.  It is rightly said, “The diabetics who know most live longest”. Lions I ask you to please educate yourselves that Diabetes Mellitus has taken epidemic proportions in USA in the last decade. As Lions of 24-C all of our clubs missions this year should be to educate all Lions and our fellow Americans about Diabetes to create awareness programs and help in the prevention of this disease. We as Lions all should intend to help people with Diabetes improve their Quality of Life by managing their disease effectively. We all should be willing to work with healthcare professionals, schools, churches, youth groups and senior groups in our state of Virginia in order to foster wonderful NEW active Lions Diabetes Awareness Programs.

Some of the underlying factors for Diabetes include faulty and unbalanced diet leading to obesity (especially “Perivisceral Fat Accumulation” which causes Insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus), sedentary life-style and genetic predisposition.  Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus on the other hand is an autoimmune disease seen in younger people who are thin or normal weight and prone to Ketosis and managed by Insulin and tight control of blood sugar is the goal to prevent complications. As Lions we all should work harder this year toward the hope to contribute to the well-being of our population by proper education and surveillance of diagnosed, undiagnosed and Pre-Diabetes. Lions please know with the help of Lion Marcia Aulebach and UVA Hospital all of 24-C Lions can get educated and information to help inform each other and our communities. So our bottom line as lions of 24-C is to give information and knowledge about Diabetes to people for primary prevention of Diabetes and for secondary prevention of long-term complications in those who already have the disease.

Please include a Diabetes Awareness education table along with your sight and hearing units EVENTS this year. Lion Marcia has done lots of research and put all the following information together for you along with Lion wed designer Chris they have created this wonderful web-sight with lots of great information and please print out and use this information for all of your needs and education. Please call Lion Marcia with questions, GET INFORMATION for you communities, she will be glad to assist you in any way. She has worked hard for Lions of 24-C to get information to each club, visit each club in which she has been very successful, however Lions, Lion Marcia’s hopes Lions of 24-C clubs will continue to help to start their own programs for your club today. Please spread the word THAT we as 24-C LIONS will this year start active programs in each of our clubs.
