October Newsletter

Zone Meeting

Our club is hosting a Zone meeting tonight with our very own Lion Kingsley, 24-C Zone Chair, presiding.  It will begin immediately following our regular meeting and members are requested to remain seated for it.

A warm welcome is extended to all visiting Lions.  We're happy to have you here, meet you and learn first-hand of your activities!

Scholarship Winner

Cari Digges, 2007 recipient of the Howard W. Kojan Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $2,200, attended the 10/10 meeting along with her Mom as our guests.  Cari, a very articulate young woman, told us about her nursing courses at PVCC and her ambition of obtaining a Master's Degree in that area.   Working towards that goal, Cari currently works at Martha Jefferson and volunteers at Palmyra Fire and Rescue.  She expressed interest in our club doings and thanked membership (as did her Mom) for the opportunity our scholarship has afforded her.  Cari will be invited back for an update.

Awards

Lion President Dave announced our club had received a certificate for "State Achievement for Banner Leadership".  Also a "Service Award" relative to SAHMSU.  Lion George Bland received a certificate awarded for "School for Lions Training".  Lion George is currently 1st VP.  Well Done Lion George!

Lion Ken was presented awards as President during 2006/07 for "Outstanding Activities" and another certificate for "net growth" in that period. During his 2-year "realm", committees for Diabetes Awareness, Youth Initiative and a Health Fair were established and expanded.  These committees have done much to promote the Rivanna Lions within the Fluvanna community.  Congratulations from your fellow members Lion Ken!

Golf Tournament - October 20

Lion Ron, Chair, reported a $4,500 profit from the above event.  He thanked all members for their involvement in securing hole sponsors, prizes and for their help at the event setting up signs, registration, sitting at specific holes, and for quilt raffles and mulligan sales.  Lion Wayne was singled out for all his efforts and great publicity.   Well done Lion Ron in pulling this event together so successfully!!!   Undistributed prizes from the tournament were raffled off at the 10/24 meeting.  Congratulations to the winners.

Football Raffle

A profit of $1,528.77 (?) was made on this year's raffle.  Lion Jim announced sales began in earnest at Old Farm Day and continued with two weekends at Sam's.  He expressed thanks to all who sold/bought books and helped with sales at the above events.  Thanks once again to Lions Sara and Guy for making this fundraiser possible by donating four UVA tickets each year!

The winning raffle ticket was drawn at the 10/24 meeting and the winner is Vivian Kendrick, wife of Lion Wayne.  Congratulations!

OLD FARM DAY, Oct. 6

Over 25 members in their blue club shirts took part this year with SAHMSU, Diabetes Awareness exhibit, golf tournament promotion, football raffle sales and a separate table devoted to information and give-a-ways about our club and Lionism.  We were able to screen over 85 individuals from age 4 thru 85 at the event and suggested referrals for professional follow-up to 21. One woman who had been screened came back later to express appreciation for what we do and gave us a $10 donation.  Another, a recent successful candidate for the Fork Union Board of Supervisors told us about her surprise upon learning she needed to see her doctor after the results of her glaucoma screening!

Lion Gerry thanked all for participating, with emphasis on our very newest members who boarded SAHMSU for the first time and have now started adding up their hours as screeners.  Perhaps there is a "Certified Trainer" in the offing.  Please see Lion Gerry if you have interest in working with SAHMSU.  Thanks.

The "torrential" rain of last year that turned attendance at the event to hundreds rather than thousands was, gratefully, missing.   OFD is a yearly Fluvanna event where we are afforded the opportunity to let our community know who we are and what we do. All in all, it was a most successful day.

BOD Doings

Lion President Dave announced the following appointments:  Lion Paul Rawling will complete the open "Director 1-year" position and Lion Guy will be "Membership Chair" for the remainder of this club year.  Good Luck Lions.

In the past, we have voted to meet only once during November because of Thanksgiving.  This year our second meeting falls on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving and so we will meet twice this month, the second time being 11/28.  Please note.

Miscellaneous

Mints:  Another $73.50 has been collected.  Thank you Lion Tom W.

Youth Initiative:  Lion Marjorie let us know that 65 families have been helped at Central Elementary with the new food packing project members do each Friday and just before holidays.  Please call/see her if you can volunteer any Friday.  Thanks.

Cell Phone Collection:  Lion Ken made a collection box for used cell phones.  Members are urged to turn in their old ones which will be given to the Gordonsville Lions to help with their newest fundraiser.  Please bring to any meeting.  Thank you.

Tail Twister:  Lion Tom W. has started and will be asking members questions based on information contained in the Lions magazine.  Read carefully!

Thanksgiving and Christmas:  We have been asked to bring non-perishable food stuffs to the first November meeting for Thanksgiving distribution to the Fluvanna Food Pantry.  Lions John and Julia are co-chairs of this committee and will work with Lion Ellen on "Happy Face" participation for Christmas.

"Who's Who in Rivanna Lions Club:  If you would like to complete a form for a future newsletter, please see Lion Gerry.  Also, those who have forms please complete and turn in to Lion Gerry.  Thanks.

50/50

Lion George won $28 on 10/10 and Lion Pam won $35.50 on 10/14.  Neither picked the Ace of Spades and so the dollars keep building.

Editor's Notes:

Please pass on to me any correspondence, pictures, etc. that may be used in our scrapbook.  Then, please give me lots of time to update the book - I have difficulty handling pressure!   Prior years' scrapbooks are available for borrowing at any time.  You need only ask.
