Meeting of 9/26
Many members, including Lion President Dave,
attended the 24-C Zone meeting hosted by Scottsville Lions Club on the above
date. We were fortunate that Lion George
Bland, 1st VP, stepped in to take over the presidential duties. Under his leadership, the meeting ran
smoothly and efficiently. Thank you Lion
George!!!!!!!!!
Treasurer
Lion Chris, our Webmaster, has agreed to take
on this most important task and immediately accepted the responsibilities and
made them his own. We may now all breathe
easier knowing our funds are in such capable hands. Thank you Lion Chris!!
Golf Tournament - October 20
Keep signing up hole sponsors and teams. We need all kinds of prizes, no matter how
small. Also, please volunteer to help at the event, our most successful
fundraiser. See Lion Ron with prizes and
teams - Lion Wayne with sponsors!
Thanks.
Football Raffle
Lion Jim, a recent graduate from obedience
school with his beautiful black lab Kelly, will be selling football raffles at
Old Farm Day. Remember to turn in
your money by October 10 along with any unsold books. He also has plans to solicit buyers at SAM'S
Club on October 12/13 and October 19/20.
Please see him to offer your help on these dates.
OLD FARM DAY, Oct. 6
As you read this, OFD will have already taken
place. Members signed up to help with
SAHMSU, Diabetes Awareness, football raffle sales, promotion of upcoming golf
tournament, etc. Lion Gerry will give a
full report on 10/10.
Youth Initiative
Lion Marjorie thanked members for their
generous participation as Reading Buddies, Book Buddies, Math Olympiad,
Mentors, and most recently under the nutrition category as Food Packers on
Friday afternoons and days before holidays.
She stressed how much of an impact our presence in the school has
meant. Thank you Lion Marjorie for all
you have done with this committee, We applaud your efforts and results.
It is never too late to get involved and
the time required is minimal. Please
contact Lion Marjorie to volunteer.
Road Cleanup - Rt. 15
Enough members were present on Saturday, 9/15,
that minimum time was spent accomplishing the task of cleanup and Spudnut
consumption. Perhaps the minimum time
was a result of the participation of Lion Chris' son, Dylon, and one of his
friends. They have our sincerest thanks
and appreciation for joining in this project and we look forward to more of
their help in the future - plus - future Lions!
Thanks to everyone.
Miscellaneous
SAHMSU: During the week of
9/10-9/14, Lions Gerry, Kingsley, Paul R., Dee, Shirley, Pam, Sylvia, Guy and
Sara worked at elementary, middle and high schools in both Louisa and
Gordonsville. Lion Cricket is always
appreciative of our help.
SAHMSU was purchased by 24-C in 2000 at a cost
of over $250,000. When we scheduled our
first event, we were generously offered help by other Lions who had completed
the necessary training. Since then we
have been in a position to offer our help to those clubs who want to bring
SAHMSU to their communities but lack the needed expertise. Our members (and new members) consistently
come forward to take the required training, enabling us to bring the services
aboard SAHMSU to Fluvanna and help wherever we can.
Lion Secretary Florann will include mention of
our help in the monthly report she sends to District 24-C and we look forward
to seeing it in the Bark of the C-Lion.
Fun Stuff: Lion Marcia introduced an innovative way for
members to celebrate events and enrich our Administrative Account that she
experienced during a visit with another Lions club. It's called "Happy Dollar". At any time during a meeting a
member may raise his/her hand and state, "I want to contribute a Happy
Dollar because ..........", tell the reason and place the dollar in our
Tail Twister's gold Lion. Thank you Lion
Marcia for bringing it to us.
Tail Twister Fine: Membership voted to fine our Tail Twister $1
for being absent and not providing a substitute member to handle 50/50 on
9/26. However, there was one
dissention. According to the rules, the
Tail Twister can fine any member for any reason but he/she can only be fined by
unanimous vote. You
lucked out this time Lion Tom!
Sports Poster Contest: Lion Pam spoke about a cash grant awarded the
Drs. Weiss (who work with us supplying exams and eyeglasses to the needy in
Fluvanna). They are sponsoring a poster
contest open to Fluvanna school children with cash awards. The Drs. Weiss have
asked if we are interested in having a panel of our members judge the entries
to determine the winners. Enough members
showed their interest to warrant Lion Pam pursuing the matter further with the
Drs. Weiss. She will report details
soon.
50/50
Lion Ron won $32 on 9/12 but failed to pick the
Ace. There was no 50/50 on 9/26 (see
above).
Bits & Pieces:
This is an area where news about members and
families is posted. You need not wait
until your great-grandchild is elected to Congress to have something
published. Email me, call, pass a note,
whatever. Just let me know. Thanks.
Sadly, we must report that Lion Marjorie's Mom
passed recently. Our sincerest sympathy
is extended to her and her family.
It's great to report that Lion Marcia has
received an award from Lions International. The "Challenge to Change"
Certificate of Appreciation has been given to her in recognition of her efforts
promoting diabetes awareness. She is to
be congratulated for her accomplishments in this area and, as members of the
Rivanna Lions, we are well aware of all she has done.. Taking on the chairmanship of this new
committee in our club only two years ago, she is now District 24-C
"Diabetes Awareness Education" chair.
To be recognized by Lions International is indeed very special. We share in the pride she is now enjoying. Congratulations, Lion Marcia!

Editor's Notes:
Please pass on to me any correspondence,
pictures, etc. that may be used in our
scrapbook. Then, please give me lots of
time to update the book - I have difficulty handling pressure! Prior years' scrapbooks are available for
borrowing at any time. You need only
ask.
