Robert Ambrose Sutton Our story of my line of the Sutton family began with the early 17th century migration of Robert Ambrose Sutton, and his son Symon and son George Ambrose Sutton,
from whom many Sutton's in the USA decend.

Robert Ambrose Sutton was born in England, and before immigrating to America, he married Sarah Warner on August 25, 1613, who was born in Essex, Kelvedon, England. He migrated over probably within a few years of his son George Ambrose Sutton who came over in 1634. Robert Ambrose Sutton eventually settled and died in Hempstead, Long Island, New York.

1. George Ambrose Sutton, son of Robert Ambros Sutton, was born 4/12/1613 in Tenterden, Kent Co, England, migrated over in 1634, lived in Situate & married in Scituate, Plymouth Colony, to Sarah Tilden on 3/13/1635-36 . Sarah was born 1/13/1612-13 in Tenterden, Kent Co.

He an his wife then migrated to land that would later become the royal colony of North Carolina in 1729. initially this land was held by Lords Proprietors and their descendants who were reciepients of this land as a gift from the King-

Other children went to Piscataway which would eventually become a city when New Jersey is created.

George Ambrose Sutton died at the age of 56 on his birthday April 12, 1669 in Albemarle County, Perquimans Dist, North Carolina.

Notes for George Sutton:

Following the Quaker persecution in Mass., George Sutton and his wife, Sarah, moved to Perquimans County in the Colony of Carolina. He died there April 12, 1669, leaving two sons, Nathaniel and Joseph. They left many descendants who have spread out over North Carolina and Virginia. (The Suttons of Caroline County, VA by T. Dix Sutton)

Sutton-Newby House. (National Register) This is one of the oldest houses in the Albemarle, probably built circa 1745 by Joseph Sutton on land which had belonged to his family for nearly seventy years.

Founders of the family were George Sutton (died 12 April 1669, probably in Perquimans) and his wife Sarah (Tilden) Sutton.

Sutton had sailed from Sandwich, England in 1634 to Scituate, Massachusetts.

After coming to Carolina, Suttonís children married: Joseph to Deliverance Nicholson,

Nathaniel to Deborah Astine,

Sarah to John Barrow,

and Elizabeth to Ralph Fletcher

Their descendants are numerous.

Nathanielís son Joseph married Parthenia Durant and fathered the son Joseph who probably built the house. The story-and-a-half frame structure is notable for a Flemishbond gable end ornamented by patterns of glazed headers.

5. William3 Sutton (George2, Robert Ambrose1) was born May 25, 1641 in Scituate, Plymouth Colony., Mass, and died April 28, 1718 in Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.

He married (2) Damaris Bishop July 11, 1666 in Eastham, Massachusetts. She was born Abt. 1646 in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony., Mass, and died February 06, 1681/82 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.

He married (3) Jane Barnes January 03, 1682/83 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey. She was born July 11, 1666 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, and died Unknown.

Notes for William Sutton:

He was a Quaker and the holder of large tracts of land. It is generally supposed that William had one or more brothers with him when he emigrated to "The New Wold", but the family was of such and adventurous disposition that it's members seldom stayed in any one location long enought to be on record. He served as constable in 1673 in Piscataway, New Jersey and left no will. In the New Jersey of a hundred years ago, one family of Sutton's was so numerous, that, in the writer's opinion, to bear the name and to derive ancestry from the State is almost proof of membership in it. There were, for the most part, farmers and artisans, attached to the Baptist or Presbyterian creeds, and located chiefly in the northern half of the State-- The East Jersey of colonial times. The townships of Piscataway in Middlesex, Tewkesbury in Hunterdon and especially Bernard in Somerset, with the village of Basking Ridge, may be mentioned as particular family centers. The name is comparatively rare in New Jersey today, as the later generations have scattered in all directions. Canada has its representatives, and there is probably not a State in the Union but has been planted with shoots from this old New England Stock.

William of Scituate and Eastham, and of Piscataway, N.J., Quaker, b. about 1641; d. 28 of 4m. 1718;

amrried(1) at Eastham, on Cape Cod, 11 July 1666 to Damaris Bishop, d. 6 Feb. 1682/3,

daughter of Richard and Alice (Martin) (Clark) Bishop;

mmarried also (2) Jane Barnes, daughter of James Barnes.

William Sutton first appears at Barnstable, on Cape Cod, where, on 5 June 1666, he was haled into court and fined for purloining the Bible from the meeting house, "one pound and for telling a lye about the same, ten shillings." His departure from the town was probably expedited by these occurences, and a few weeks later, at the neighboring settlement of Eastham, he took refuge in matrimony with Damaris Bishop.

They had ten children, the first three born in Eastham, and the rest born in Piscataway. (New England Historic Genealogical Register, Volume 91, January 1937)

SUTTON, WILLIAM, 1641-1718. Constable of Piscataway, New Jersey, 1693. Sutton, Miss Lucy. (Colonial Dames of XVII Century, 1896-(1968)

"William Sutton first appears at Barnstable, on Cape Cod, where on 5 June 1666, he was hauled to court and fined for purloining the Bible from the meeting house," one pound, and for telling a lye about the same, ten shillings."(One year later,6 June 1667,it was reported that William still owed 10 shillings of his fine.) His departure from the town was probably expedited by these occurences, and a few weeks later, at the neighboring settlement of Eastham, he took refuge in matrimony with Damaris Bishop. (Sutton Searchers newsletter #2 July 1991)

". . . he [William Sutton] lived in Eastham from 1666 to Oct 1671. . . . He went west to NJ about 1672 or 1673. The quest of religious freedom was perhaps the reason for his removal, since in the NJ Colony he was an influential Quaker. On or near the Partian River, not far from the present town of New Brunswick, William Sutton settled and prospered. Known for his fair dealing with the Indians, the wolves and forest were his only enemies. In 1682 he was the owner of 249 acres if land. He held the office of freeholder constable and town clerk. In 1713 he was spoken of as an aged man and he was buried in the Quaker churchyard in Woodbridge." (Outlaw Genealogy, Albert Timothy Outlaw & Arnie Henry Outlaw)

His wife Elizabeth died (according to her gravestone in the Baptist Churchyard at Stelton, Piscataway), May 10, 1731, aged fifty-two years.

"John Sutton) apparently lived first at Hingham, but later removed to Scituate, in the Plymouth Colony, where on 2 Dec 1653 he sold the lands "which the town of Hingham gave to John Sutton, my father." She was born Unknown, and died Unknown.

Notes for Daniel Sutton:

Married, 1., October 31, 1704, Patience, daughter of John 2, and Dorothy Martin, of Piscataway. (John 1, Martin* was one of the four Piscaataway grantees. He came from Dover, in the valley of the Piscataqua, in what is now New Hampshire. He was a landholder there in 1648, served on the grand jury in 1654, and was freeman in 1666. His wife's name was Esther Roberts. Married, II., August 25, 1724, Lydia Collier, of Woodbridge.

* John Martin, Charles Gilman, Hugh Dunn, and Hopewell Hull applied for and received, December 18, 1666, the Piscataway land grant.

The following is in handwriting put in 1936: (John Martin, Jr. born 1650 at Dover, New Hampshire, married June 26, 1677, Dorothy Smith, daughter of Richard Smith of Woodbridge, New Jersey, and Newton Long Island. Esther Roberts wife of John 1, Martin, was dau. of Thomas Roberts, pioneer of Dover, New Hampshire, and Styled "New Hampshire's first Colonial Governor" elected 1640. In 1641 all this region "of the Piscatagua" was annexed to Massachusetts, and was not erected into the Province of New Hampshire until two generations later.

Lydia 4 Collier (Thomas 3, Moses 2, Thomas 1) second wife of Daniel 2 Sutton. Her first anccestor was of Hingham, Mass., 1635. She was aunt of Rachel 5, Collier (Colyeror, Collyer) who md. Jonathan 4, Sutton. End of handwriting and back to book.

In 1719 he was member of the board of the freeholders. As late as 1729 he is noted as living at Piscataway; but in 1736, when he serves as an executor of his brother Richard's estate, he is said to be a resident of Somerset County. He is probably the man who was dismissed from the Piscataway Baptist Church, where his death is recorded in 1761. His age was seventy-nine years. When we consider the place of residence of his sons, and the fact that he attended church in Morristown, it deems beyond doubt that his Somerset County property was located in Bernard Township near Basking Ridge, Where, as we learn from the Elizabethtown Bill in Chancery, some one of the Suttons had located prior to Feb. 1729-30. As late as 1736 this part of the county was almost unbroken wilderness.
