![]() IMPORTANT FACTS Approximately 212,600 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year - including 1,300 men - and 40,200 will die from this disease. SYMPTOMS, ABNORMALITIES AND CHANGES Early breast cancer usually does not cause pain. In fact, when breast cancer first develops, there may be no symptoms at all. If you have any concerns or find even a small change, call your doctor. Early detection can help save lives. There is a 97% five year survival rate when breast cancer is caught before is spreads to other parts of the body. STEPS TO AID IN EARLY DETECTION Starting at age 20, women should discuss Breast Self Examination (BSE) with their doctors. Women in their 20's and 30's should have a clinical breast exam by a health professional at least every 3 years, and women 40 and older should have an exam every year. At age 40, women should begin getting annual mammograms by a licensed technologist. If there is a history of breast cancer in your family, consult your doctor and start earlier than noted.
