Breast Cancer Awareness

IMPORTANT FACTS
Approximately 212,600 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year - including 1,300 men - and 40,200 will die from this disease.
SYMPTOMS, ABNORMALITIES AND CHANGES
Early breast cancer usually does not cause pain. In fact, when breast cancer first develops, there may be no symptoms at all. If you have any concerns or find even a small change, call your doctor. Early detection can help save lives. There is a 97% five year survival rate when breast cancer is caught before is spreads to other parts of the body.
STEPS TO AID IN EARLY DETECTION
Starting at age 20, women should discuss Breast Self Examination (BSE) with their doctors. Women in their 20's and 30's should have a clinical breast exam by a health professional at least every 3 years, and women 40 and older should have an exam every year. At age 40, women should begin getting annual mammograms by a licensed technologist. If there is a history of breast cancer in your family, consult your doctor and start earlier than noted.

History of VCRA
In 1979 a group of about ten individuals banded together to create an organization (Virginia Tumor Registrars Association) of persons who compiled information about cancer patients. These registrars' task was to gather cancer patient data and submit it to the Virginia Tumor Registry within the Department of Health. Since its inception, the organization has held an educational fall conference rotating around the state. In 1995, the association voted to change its name to the Virginia Cancer Registrars Association.

Currently, our dues are $20 and we offer all new CTR's a free one year membership. We also have a drawing for one free membership to NCRA at the end of each year and included in our budget is a $1,000 honarium for the President to attend the NCRA conference. We are always striving to improve VCRA and the world of cancer registrars in Virginia, for it is our professional organization. It is ours to build and to keep vital.
