History The Virginia State Association of Parliamentarians was chartered in 1957, although several units were already well established in the Commonwealth. On October 8, 1956, the Tidewater Unit hosted Mrs. Roy Rowntree, President of NAP, to discuss forming a state organization. Mrs. P. E. Lotz was president of the unit and Virginia State Chairman. Mrs. Lotz called a meeting of the five existing units on Friday, May 24, 1957 to adopt bylaws and elect officers to establish the new organization, the Virginia Association of Parliamentarians. Parliamentarians from Norfolk, Richmond, Fredericksburg, Newport News, and Virginia Beach participated in the organizational meeting. The first president, Mrs. Donald Funk of the Tidewater Unit, guided the organization through the formative years: 1957-1959.
Although most activity occurs at the local unit/club level, our well-attended annual convention provides an opportunity for further learning and a lively exchange of ideas. Long-time member, Virginia Dalton, cites some interesting trends. Whereas, early membership was primarily females from Womens’ Clubs, we continue to attract more men and more professionals. Likewise, requests for services come increasingly from government and professional organizations. ![]() EQUALITY FOR ALL |
