About

On February 4, 2003, Amenselah NewMedia Art (ANMA) was incorporated as a regular, nonprofit corporation in the State of Washington.

ANMA is an emerging, grassroots, nonprofit organization, which seeks to communicate the unique experiences of communities of color dispersed throughout the Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia, the Caribbean, and Europe, and the remote island-nations around the world.

ANMA is organized into five operational units, two programs, and three projects. The first unit is Administration, which consists of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

Administration has responsibility for the daily operation, funding, marketing, promotion, and general fiduciary function of the organization. This unit is primarily made up of volunteers and staff. The Administration unit has allocated a 20% share of the operating budget.

Development, the second unit, develops, implements, and manages capital campaigns, grant writing, and fundraising proposals, strategies, and projects.

ANMA’s third unit, Communications, is responsible for communications between ANMA and outside organizations, publicity, community relations, and for developing and maintaining organizational imaging products such as website, public service announcements, and other marketing materials.

The fourth unit, Compliance, monitors and maintains oversight of legal compliance with international, federal, state, and local regulations governing the organization, including, but not limited to, accounting practices and copyright resources.

Through a Policy Manual, volunteers, staff, and Board Members monitor and oversee that requirements are being met with an automated tracking system, reports, and interactive communication.

The fifth unit is Distribution. Distribution works with all ANMA units and our community partners to make our programs available to the public. Through the Distribution unit, thousands of participants will, over time, have the opportunity to engage in the programs offered.

Why ANMA

In 1996, the National Endowment for the Arts eliminated funding to individual artists. Many state arts organizations followed suit and as a result, opportunities for emerging and underrepresented artists have diminished significantly.

Emerging artists, artists who have been exhibiting professionally for less than five years, and underrepresented artists, artists of color and women artists, play an invaluable role in communicating the unique voice of their rich, cultural heritages to the world at large.

While opportunities for artists diminished, a similar blow was dealt to struggling community-run and minority-owned media outlets in mid-2003, when the Federal Communications Commission eliminated its media consolidation rule, allowing media outlets cross-ownership in both broadcasting stations and newspapers. Media analysts believe this ruling will erode the amount, quality, and diversity of public interest news coverage, including local, state, and federal government activities, foreign affairs, public policy analysis, and investigative reporting. Further, critics of the FCC ruling forecast that cross-ownership will further reduce minority ownership of media outlets, reducing content targeted to minority audiences.

Programs

Two programs, new media communications, and visual art advocacy, represents the core work in which ANMA engages.

Newmedia Communications

Race and Other Pink Elephants (ROPE Radio)

ROPE Radio is a volunteer-run radio project whose mission is to increase public understanding of the role race plays in influencing public policy in governments, education, and other institutions.

The volunteer media team including radio journalists, producers, and technical engineers produce a weekly fifteen-minute program that provides content targeted to communities of color. The radio program is uploaded onto the ROPE Radio website for usage by community-run radio stations and independent media outlets.

Visual Art Advocacy

Ephemeral Gallery Project

The Ephemeral Gallery Project is community-based program that provides exhibition opportunities to emerging and underrepresented artists in temporary gallery spaces donated by local business owners, local and state government, and community organizations.

Anonymous Art Project

The Anonymous Art project is a collaboration between ANMA, local organizations, and business owners to engage community members in creating murals in schools, hospitals, and abandoned buildings.

How to help

ANMA is a new, grassroots organization, currently working on grassroot socio-cultural action and development, including board member recruitment and development, program development, and fundraising. ANMA is in need of community-minded volunteers with a great entrepreneurial spirit, and a sense of adventure.

Volunteer (unpaid) Board members help run the organization and ensure it is meeting its goals. Fundraisers create unique and fun private donation campaigns. Private donors make ANMA a success.

Tax Exempt Statement

Most foundations and other grant-giving agencies only fund nonprofit organizations (NPOs), which have been granted federal tax-exempt status under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). The same is true for most donors, because donation to federal tax-exempt NPOs are deductible on the donor’s federal income taxes. However, because of the time and expense involved in getting federal tax-exempt status, some small, grassroots NPOs seek the benefits of federal-tax exemption through fiscal sponsors. A fiscal sponsor is a federal tax-exempt corporation that agrees to receive and disburse the funds for an NPO without federal tax-exempt status.

Presently Amenselah NewMedia Art does not have IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. NPOs have 27 months from their incorporation date to apply for federal tax-exempt status. ANMA plans to apply for federal tax-exempt status. Additionally, ANMA is actively seeking a fiscal sponsorship relationship with a likeminded, NPO. In the meantime, we rely on donor and volunteer contributions to make our programs successful.

ANMA is registered to solicit charitable donations with the Washington State Office of the Secretary of State. Registration number: 10980
