“Don’t Know” question- Are lawsuits against fast food firms justified?

Summary of Source:

The article explains the lawsuit between Caesar Barber and four other fast food firms. Caesar sued the fast food firms claiming that their food made him obese. He said that he has been eating at fast food diners since 1950 because it was relatively cheap and, so he thought, healthy. But since he started eating fast food, he’s had several heart attacks and very poor health. He stated that the advertisements tricked him because they said that the hamburgers contained 100% beef, so he thought they were good for him.

Analysis of Source:

The article gave quote after quote from Caesar himself and the fast food firms making this article very effective and convincing. The quotes worked to together with the proceeding paragraphs to explain thoroughly the main topic. At the end, the comment made by Steven Anderson, chief executive and president of the National Restaurant Association, was a good point to make because it was very true and opinionated. The comment was simple, only one sentence long, and had a opinion that strongly went with the article.

“Don’t Know” question- Who is to blame for the cause of obesity?

Summary of Source:

This article points out the fact that other then genes, personal choice, psychology, and marketing, fast food shouldn’t be blamed. And then again the food is very large in size as well as fatty substance and calories. The average burger now is eight times the size of a burger in 1957! A glass of soda is three times larger! And this doesn’t count the “super-sized” items, which enlarge the food tremendously. The article is trying to say that unless the fast food restaurants are forcing someone to eat the food, they cannot be blamed.

Analysis of Source:

The article gave a very good point but was not backed up by any supporting information. One statement that went against the main point stated that there has been over $100 billion going toward fixing obesity problems from fast food. The main issue in this article is that fast food shouldn’t be blamed for the obesity of someone, and by saying how much money is needed for fixing obesity from fast food doesn’t support the topic. In fact in contradicts the topic.

Salleh, Anna. ”How Fast Food Can Fool You.” News in Science.
Thursday, October 23, 2003. Pages 1 of 1

http://abc.net.au/science/news/health/HealthRepublish_972816.htm “Don’t Know” question- How does fast food change our looks on proportions?

Summary of Source:

British researches stated that since fast food has “super-sized” meals and such large portions that that change our minds to think that larger portions are normal. The fast food plays into our every day life. Also, the scientists say that fat, obviously, makes you obese in fast food, but they believe that there are other things as well. Things like total energy that adds to it. If you sit around and watch T.V. all day then obviously you will not get thinner.

Analysis of Source:

The article had very good reasoning behind every statement. There were plenty of testimonies from scientists that make this article more convincing as well as understandable. On the other hand, testimonials are all what this article is basically, there are no straight explanations about how or why fast food affects us, it is all statements by researchers.

“Don’t Know” question-Whose to blame for the obesity of America?

Summary of Source:

This article explains that we have only ourselves to blame for our obesity, and not the fast food corporations. We make the decisions to eat the fatty foods; therefore we cannot blame the companies. Scientists say that we are quick to point our fingers at the companies when we made the choice to eat as much as we do and as bad as we do. Also British scientists believe they were influenced by American industries, and they blame America for the influence on British governments.

Analysis of Source:

This article makes a very good point that a lot of people need to consider. There are many cases of people suing fast food companies for making them fat, when in reality, they made themselves fat. They made the choice, therefore they are responsible. Also the article gave a good amount of testimonials as well as straight explanations.
