WHAT IS THE APP PROGRAM?

APP stands for Accelerated Progress Program. It is a program of accelerated instruction in Seattle Public Schools, using curriculum materials roughly two years above grade level. It serves about 1000 intellectually advanced students who meet eligibility criteria as determined by tests the students take in the fall for entry into the program the following school year. APP exists as a self-contained program in grades 1-8, with grades 1-5 located at Lowell Elementary School and grades 6-8 at Washington Middle School. APP is not a self-contained program at the high school level, but the majority of APP students go to Garfield High School.

Who is eligible for APP?

Eligibility for APP is determined by a multi-disciplinary team that reviews each student's performance on tests of cognitive ability and achievement as well as other indicators. Typically candidates score in the top 1% in comparison with students nationwide.

How is a student admitted?

Students in Grades K-7 are nominated during the October/November application period the year PRIOR to when they would enter the program. Anyone (parent, teacher, student, administrator, community member) may nominate a student. Students are screened and tested by the Highly Capable Student Programs Office. A selection committee including teachers reviews the tested pool and determines which students are eligible for Highly Capable Student Programs, including APP. Parents may then choose to accept placement for their child in APP if they consider the program appropriate.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT -- APP PARENT GROUPS

APP has two parent organizations that always welcome volunteers:

APP TASK FORCE The APP Task Force was commissioned to study and make recommendations on policies relating to the program. Task Force is made up of parents, teachers, District staff, and principals. Task Force meets monthly, usually on the third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. Meetings rotate between Lowell, Washington Middle School, and Garfield. For more information, please email Task Force Chair Jane Fellner (see APP Parents Group Contacts in left column).

APP PARENT GROUP

This is a working group of volunteers that provides program support, sponsors general parent meetings, publishes the APP Newsletter, and organizes the new family orientation (tours and summer picnic). Parent Group meetings, usually on the first Saturday of the month, provide an informal forum for discussion of issues affecting APP. For more information, please email Steering Committee Chair Courtney Jelaco (see APP Parents Group Contacts in left column).

VOLUNTEERS AT SCHOOL ALWAYS WELCOME

In addition to the above groups you can join, there are many other ways to support the program and learn what is going on at school. A great way to join in the activity is to volunteer in your child's school and classrooms. Ask teachers how you can help -- from making phone calls, to driving on field trips, to offering enrichment experiences.
