Excerpted from Lowell Elementary School 2000-01 Parent/Student Handbook

All students are expected to complete homework assignments. Teachers may assign daily, weekly, or long-term projects. Generally, students should spend the following number of minutes daily on homework.

Grades 1-2 . . . 15-20 min/day or 60-80 min/week

Grades 3-4 . . . 30 min/day or 2 hr/week

Grade 5 . . . . 45-60 min/day or 3-4 hr/week

If all assignments are complete, students should use the equivalent homework time to read.

Recommendations:

1. Check with students daily about homework assignments and see that they are completed.
2. Establish a homework area free from distractions.
3. Establish a homework time that can be consistently enforced.
4. Call the teacher if homework expectations are unclear.
