Mt St. Helens Hike

Date of hike: August 6, 2008
Location of hike: Climbers Bivouac (trailhead)
Approximate roundtrip hike time:8 to 11 hours
Tuesday August 5th
Leave the Sumner Fred Meyers at 1:30 P.M. Head south on I-5 to Woodland Exit 21. Follow frontage road and signs to Cougar east on Hwy 506. (Approx. 30 minutes to Cougar). Everyone needs to stop at the Lone Fir Resort (16806 Lewis River Rd @ Cougar) to sign the registry to climb Mt. St. Helens. Climbing date is 8/6/2008. The registry is available to sign 24 hours a day. I will pick up the climbing permits and have them available at the trailhead. Continue on Hwy 503 and follow signs to the Ape Caves. Continue past the left turn towards the Ape Caves and go to Rd. 81. Continue on Rd. 81 to Rd. 830 and follow this to the end at Climbers Bivouac. There are camp sites available here. There are private campgrounds located around Cougar.
My plan is to have dinner at the climbers bivouac.
Wednesday August 6th
Wake up around 3:00 A.M. have breakfast and break camp. Hike will start at 4:00 A.M. up the monitor ridge trail. We should summit around 11:00 to 12:00. Depending on the weather, spend about one hour on the summit. Around noon, leave summit to climbers bivouac. Approximately 4:00 P.M. we will be at the vehicles. Stop at the Lone Fir Resort to sign registry that we are off the mountain. I propose to stop for dinner at the Country Cousins in Centralia. Good food.
We should arrive at the Sumner Fred Meyers around 8:00 to 9:00 P.M. We will make any necessary phones calls for better arrival times.
I will have road maps available to all drivers. Please let me know your trip plans. It will take about 3 ½ to 4 hours to drive from Sumner to Climbers Bivouac. I will have a copy of the Climber ten essentials.
For the hike:
lots of water/drinks for rehydration (if it’s sunny: LOTS of drinks)
Lunch Trail food Energy bars Bananas A day pack Good hiking boots Weather clothing and the ten essentials More on this at Troop meeting. There are 4 climbing passes available to Boy Scouts and family. The passes cost $22.00 each. If we don’t fill the 12 person roster in-house, we can look for other climbers. Any questions contact Assist Scoutmaster Scott Fielding
