Where it all started...

"Warning"
~by Jenny Joseph~

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple,
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me...

In 1997 Sue Ellen Cooper the founder and Queen Mother of the Red Hat Society was traveling with her husband when she decided to look for a gift for her friend's 55th birthday. Sue Ellen was looking in a thrift store window and saw a red hat, she purchased the hat and remembered Jenny's poem. Sue Ellen decided that she would give the hat to her friend and frame the poem as a gift. The gift was a hit. Sue Ellen's red hat was the gift that all of her friends looked forward to when they turned 50. They had so much fun wearing their red hats that Sue Ellen called themselves the "Red Hat Society." Sue Ellen didn't know it at the time but she had just given birth to the celebration of women over 50.
