Parenting Issues

Many of our families face issues related to adoption, bonding and attachment, school placement and education, discipline, emotional and medial needs, and more. We seek to present timely and informative local speakers who can help answer our questions, provide information, & advise us about local resources. This directory is also a wealth of resources and can be used at all stages of adoption and the post-adoption process.

Our presenters have included:

FRUA, INC Conferences

FRUA, INC puts together a nationally recognized yearly conference at different points around the country. FRUA's 4th Annual Conference, Focus on Education and Development: Equipping our Children for Success was held April 26-28, 2007, in Redmond, WA. Many of us were able to help with and attended this enlightening conference! Nationally recognized attachment expert Deborah Gray gave the opening address on "Nurturing Adoptive Families: Creating Resilience after Neglect and Trauma". Trauma expert Dave Ziegler's Keynote address covered "Helping Children Find Their Way from Early Trauma to Personal Contentment". Local therapist Patty Cogen closed the conference with "Talking About Adoption with Infants, Toddlers, and Teens".

There were breakout sessions from FAS/FASD experts Julia Bledsoe & Julien Davies on neo-natal alcohol exposure, Gwen Lewis on The Educational Evaluation, Felecia Demchuk on Educational Supports, Scott Hanauer on Therapeutic Environments, Mary Ann Curran on Resiliency in Adoption, as well as sessions on speech and language, education, recovery, therapeutic environments, and more. Members may access the 2007 Conference CD from our Lending Library.

The 2008 conference was in St. Louis, Missouri. The 2009 conference is planned for San Antonio, Texas. CDs of the conferences are available for sale from FRUA, INC at http://frua.org/conference/conference.shtml
