News A horendous hurricane (Katrina) has left our country wounded, an entire city evacuated and surrounded area devistated. Rescue efforts are being made that the media is remiss in mentioning. Many private, civilian and military have given of themselves unselfishly to help in the rescue mission. This is only one story! |

New Orleans was a GHOST town. It was really eerie to experience first hand and so sad. Pack-out went well this morning. All of their belongings were safe and undamaged. The apartment did water damage from Katrina. They did experience two visits this morning while packing their rental truck backed up to their apartment. One by a neighboring city police officer just checking what they were up to; the other by two M-16 toting FBI agents pounding on door demanding ID.

Both visits resolved without incident. On way out of New Orleans, they could not resist and delayed a bit to take a tour of many of their old haunts, snapping pictures of the devastation. It was a little mind-numbing for them to witness.
Tonight they are relaxing in Tennessee. They should be in back in the Pacific NW next weekend.
The FBI guys who pounded on the door were jerks. They must not have much to do, which is obvious because there's just no one in the town to really police. They were probably seriously hoping that some nefarious shenanigans were transpiring at our place and must have been pretty disappointed with the outcome.

The wind damage from Katrina was pretty bad, and by looking at the scum lines on houses you can see how bad the flooding was. We obviously didn't make it to the areas that are re-flooding as I write, but we went to the Lakeview neighborhoods and saw what problems the breaking of the 17th Street Canal wrought. I attached a few pictures from our little tour. Talk about some high water.
Anyway, as dad wrote, we are in Memphis and are scooting our way across the USA pretty quickly so we can get our "Round the World" trip back on track. Love to all. Sean
