In 2007 Seattle Schools adopted the Five for Life Curriculum for Pre K-12 Physical Education programs. The Five for Life Program is a research-based, K-12 fitness and health program that aligns with physical education and health standards. Using age appropriate academic instructional units in an activity based setting, the Five for Life Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Programs move students through a continuum of learning without compromising activity time for students. Additionally, each program includes measurement tools that allow students to assess their fitness levels and gauge improvements through the use of periodic self-evaluation, which include a baseline measurement, goal setting and a post measurement phase. The fitness tests that students will take each year starting in 1st grade will test in the following areas:

  • Cardiorespiratory Endurance - Half Mile (1st - 2nd grade) or the mile (3rd - 5th grade)
  • Muscular Endurance - Sit Ups
  • Muscular Strength - Push Ups
  • Flexibility - V-Sit and Reach

Kindergarten students will not be officially tested in these areas but will be introduced to them in the second half of the school year and will actually practice the tests so they will at least be familiar with the tests when they start 1st grade.

The minimum standard for the fitness tests is the 50th percentile. However, at Lawton we want our students to strive to always improve their fitness levels so we have three different levels that we like our students to work towards...the 50th, 65th, and 85th percentiles. Below is link that will show you what test scores students are aiming to achieve.
