What's Next After Preschool? Some Resources

Dear Preschool Community, As the new year begins, so does the season of searching for a Kindergarten for your child. Some of you may have begun the process and most of you have heard stories of other people's searches. Many parents find it is a time when you wish that you had a roadmap to help guide you in this school finding journey. Debbie Kosman and Regan Wensnahan can help you develop such a roadmap through their parent workshops. Being both educators and parents, they have participated in this annual process through research and personal experience.

First, as elementary school teachers they advised parents of the children in our classes when their turn for searching came. Then, they stepped back to research and observe the process for their joint Masters' Thesis. Finally, they went through the steps themselves with their own children. From these different perspectives they have developed a series of workshops to help parents make the school search process more manageable and understandable. They break the process into three parts:

    The Schools--how to understand them. Teaches you how to know what schools are really telling you when you visit schools. Provides you with specific things to look for so you can get what you want in a school.
    Parental Considerations-your educational values and factors. Evaluating your educational values. Clarifying the factors you need to consider as the parent.
    Your Child as a Learner-and matching that to schools Create a portrait of your child as a learner. Matching a your child's needs to a school environment.
You might also want to look for their popular talks at the Seattle Public Library where they give a 1 hour general overview of the search process. This is followed by a presentation by the Seattle Public Schools about their registration process. Please share this information with the families in your school.

Recalled Items
Here is some safety information to check on. There are many items on The Consumer Product Safety Commission website that have been recalled. Please refer to it before you buy or use an item that came from a garage sale or a well meaning friend. Many standards have changed recently and we all want to keep our children safe. Check it out

What is PAC?
The Parent Advisory Council, or PAC, is a committee comprised of volunteer parents from each of the 6 cooperative preschools affiliated with Seattle Central Community College. The stated purpose of the PAC is to:
* Promote quality education by acting as a liaison between co-op Boards and SCCC
* Unify the co-ops by providing a communication network;
* Support diversity within the co-op community by overseeing and distributing scholarship funds.
