"Grow with your Child"

The preschool years can have a deep and enduring effect on the natural and wonderful development of your child as an individual. We believe that developing a caring community is essential to positive development. At Queen Anne Cooperative Preschool, both parents and teachers bring that sense of caring into our classrooms every day through our cooperative approach. We truly believe this gives you, the parent, the opportunity to grow with your child through these critical years.

Our School, Our Community

Our approach at Queen Anne Cooperative Preschool is an integrated one. We feel strongly that when parents are actively engaged in their child's learning, the experience is more enjoyable. Parental involvement reinforces the school experience throughout children's lives. Having served neighborhood families for more than twenty-five years, our parent-participation curriculum has created an environment that provides a caring, trusting and noncompetitive place in which children can flourish as individuals and friends.

Our Curriculum

We base our curriculum around four basic precepts:

  • cultivating creativity,
  • promoting a positive self-esteem,
  • developing social skills,
  • and encouraging intellectual and physical growth.
Integral to the success of meeting our goals is the setting we provide. It is an arena of exploration staffed by trained professionals in cooperation with you, the parents. Both the environment and curriculum follow the best practices and standards of developmentally appropriate classroom as described by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. In this spirit, parents attend one class per week with their children to assist the classroom teacher.

Our Children

We feature programs for children from ages one through four:

  • 1 year olds meet one morning per week
  • 2 year olds meet two mornings per week
  • 3 year olds meet three mornings per week
  • 4 year olds meet four afternoons per week

Our Parents

Besides working as a classroom assistant each week, our parents are directly involved in the management and operation of the school. As part of the cooperative, each family:

  • holds a board, all-school or class position, assists with an annual fundraising effort, provides snacks for class
  • participates in cleaning and maintaining the facility
  • can volunteer for many other school projects
  • must attend monthly parent meetings which are facilitated by Parent Educators from Seattle Central Community College. These valuable discussions include what to expect at each age level, what tools to use for discipline, and other topics requested by parents.

Our Success

The greatest feedback we receive is from elementary school teachers who give up top grades when it comes to the transition of a child from Queen Anne Cooperative Preschool into the primary classrooms. We receive comments that our students have a high level of social and independence skills. They applaud our students' abilities to adapt to the behaviors and routines that enhance learning.

Please come visit us, meet our staff, speak with our parents. We invite you to join our community.
