PROJECT LINUS BLANKET GUIDELINES:

All blankets must be new, handmade, washable and in child friendly colors. No store bought blankets, please!

Special care should be taken to insure that blankets are free of smoky smells or any chemicals which could cause problems for a sick child. Hospitals will not accept these blankets, and they will most likely be discarded. Recent studies show that laundering these blankets does not remove contamination, and in some cases can even make it worse. Again, if unusually strong smells due to chemicals used in detergents, fabric softeners and dryer sheets, mold and mildew or smoking products are apparent, most hospitals will discard the blanket rather than jeopardize the health of a patient.

If you have pets, please wash finished blankets before giving them to us to be sure they are free from pet hair.

Please double check to make sure that all pins have been removed from blankets. It is best not to use straight pins when working on these blankets. Try to always use safety pins.

Please knot ends securely and weave them in when crocheting or knitting.

No wool batting, fabric, or yarns can be used.

We would ask that holiday fabrics please not be used: Christmas, Halloween, Easter, etc.

A good all-purpose size blanket is 40x60 inches. It fits in a crib nicely but is also large enough for bigger kids to wrap up because of the length.

If making a blanket out of baby fabric, make it the size for a baby, not for a teen. (Baby & toddler sizes range from 24x24 inches to 36x45 inches.)

Same goes for fabric more suitable for a teen, don't make it a small baby size. Teen blankets sizes can range from 40x60 to 40x70. (Fabric width is usually 42 inches or less, as this size top is easier to find backing fabric for.)

Grade school aged children’s blankets go up to 40x60 inches.

When preparing fabric, be sure to cut off the selvedge edges to give it a clean look.

If the blanket is fringed on two ends, hold the fabric up before starting to cut and see if you have trimmed the sides even.

When hand tying quilts, please make sure ties are approximately 4-6 inches apart.

If you have any questions, either call or email one of the coordinators of the Tri-Cities, WA Chapter of Project Linus.
