KidzLink Projects

*CALLING ALL KIDS*

Check this site each month for two new fun and fascinating projects. E-mail us below with your ideas and questions. While you're at it let us know what you think of the projects of the month. How did yours turn out?

Project 1:

Plant People

Gather up these supplies and before you know it you'll have a funny friend to take care of:

One nylon stocking (make sure it's not your mom's newest pair)

Potting soil or sawdust

2 Tablespoons grass seed

String or a twist tie

Thumb tacks or fabric pieces and straight pins for eyes, nose and mouth

Small plate or saucer

It's simple, just cut off the foot of the nylon stocking and pour in the grass seed. If you'd like a really hairy head pour it all in. If you prefer thinner hair, put in less. Now, add the soil or sawdust, whichever you are using. Tie the ends of the stocking tightly with string or a twist tie, so the soil doesn't leak out. You're almost finished! Set the stocking on a plate with the tied side down and shape it into a round head. Use thumb tacks, fabric and straight pins to make a face. It's easy just push the tacks in for eyes and a nose, then use the fabric for a mouth. Secure with straight pins.

Now soak your plant person in water and place it in a warm, sunny spot, like a window. Sprinkle with water daily. Plant people are always thirsty! Soon it's hair will start growing. You can give it hair cuts or let it grow long! Have fun!

Project 2:

Carrot Top Jungle:

Here's another fun project! Carrot tops grow so fast you can practically see it happening before your eyes! All you need is:

A plate or saucer

The left over tops of carrots with about 1 inch of the orange part showing and no green stems

Water

If the tops aren't already trimmed off your carrots have an adult help you cut them. Place a small amount of water in the saucer and set the carrot tops, cut side down, (stem side up), in the water. Set on a window-sill and watch them grow. It may take a few days to get started but once they do you'll be amazed at how fast they grow! You can do the same thing with turnip tops.

 Calling all Parents
Spend time in The Secret Garden with your children and watch them blossom!

Just a few extra minutes a day is all it takes to grow lasting memories!

Find your favorite quiet spot in The Secret Garden - mine is the beach - and read a story to your child during recess, before school or after school.

Invite your child to meet you for lunch in the garden. It's a wonderful place to spend quality time together.

Please clean up after yourselves!

Garden Curriculum
*Calling all Teachers*

Need some ideas on how to incorporate The Secret Garden into you class curriculum? In this section you will find a list of curriculum ideas. My ultimate plan is to put together packets of information on each subject that will be kept in the school library. Teachers could then check the packets out as needed. Until then contact Kim Keltto via e-mail (below) for more information on any of these subjects or to arrange guest speakers for your class.

Curriculum Ideas by Month:

September - Plant a late summer salad garden.

November - Plant spring bulb containers. Plant Hollyhocks in peat pots and build Hollyhock houses with them in the spring.

January - Start herbs and vegetables indoors in peat pots or egg cartons.

March - Plant a spring salad garden.
