Chimpanzees have been teaching their offspring how to crack open nuts for years. The panda nuts provide up to 3,000 calories a nut, and are important to their deit. Chimpanzees crack open the nuts by hitting the nuts with a pointed stone which can weigh up to 33 pounds. This is very skillfull behavior. It takes up to 7 years to learn. Remarkably the chimpanzees hit with precisely the right force. Selection of a smashing stone takes time thoughb because of difficulty in size, shape, and weight. Nut smashing has not spread widely among the chimpanzees. This knowledge has been, and will be transmitted from chimp to chimp for generation to generation.

Chimpanzees crack open about 100 nuts a day with the new tools. Most Chimpanzees live near Panda trees because the tree gives the panda nuts the chimppanzees need. It is vital to their survival.

The panda nut gives the chimps 3,000 calories.
