 Join the Team

So you want to play Ultimate?
The following is a dialogue by Julian Kos.
There are a few options for you as a Marquette student.
Option #1---Join the team
There is an infinite amount of space on our Ultimate team. "How?" you ask. Well, we try to have about 12-16 people go to each tournament giving us 5-9 subs, a healthy amount. "How is this infinite?" you ask. You see, we can take more than one team to a tournament. So there!
There is room for everyone at MU to play Ultimate and speaking from experience, the best way to learn how to play is to go out and play with people who know how. Come out to practices, come out to scrimmages, come out to tournaments and it is guaranteed that in less than 2 semesters, you will be a solid part of this team.
"But I don't know how to throw, how can I join the team?"
You can join the team because we have 20-25 people ready and willing to teach you all that they know about Ultimate, starting with the basics: Cutting, Catching, and Throwing. I went from never having thrown a disc to playing in tournaments and making kids my bitch in less than a semester.
"How much does it all cost?"
Because you go to such a great University, the costs to play Ultimate are not very high. You see, we have an amazing student government, MUSG, that collects student activity fees from you each semester and then allocates those funds appropriately. They have helped us succeed and grow for the past 3 years, allowing us to attend tournaments we would not otherwise be able to afford. Thanks MUSG!! Also, we receive funding from the Club Sports Department, which helps us buy jerseys. Thanks!!!. And finally SWEENEY'S COLLEGE BOOKS has stuck with us through thick and thin to help support our team. BUY YOUR BOOKS AT SWEENEY’S and support our team. So you see, we are supported from many angles and that minimizes the amount of money coming out of your pocket.
"I'm a girl and I want to play Ultimate too!"
No worries, girls can play Ultimate too. MU has recently formed a womens team and is growing rapidly and becoming a solid team. Check out their website!!
Often we have combined practices and help each other learn and fun is had by all.
"How often do you practice?"
We usually have several practices during the week and have a scrimmage on the weekends. Weekday practices will be scheduled so that we can have the most people attend. We keep in mind that many people have evening classes and that you won't be able to make it to every practice, but you won't get better if you don't come to practice. So scheduling is clutch!
"How long is the Ultimate Season?"
There are two seasons of Ultimate. In the fall there are many tournaments that are attended by college teams, but the Fall season is known as the Club Season. The UPA Club Championship Series is held in the fall. In the winter, people run around in the snow and have fun and also play in the Milwaukee Ultimate Club's indoor league, and although this is a lot of fun, it is mostly to prepare for the spring. In the spring there are more college team tournaments and the UPA College Championship Series. This is what we look forward to all year. We play in a huge tournament against all other college teams (over 400 teams registered for Sectionals in 2005), and try to qualify for nationals. During the summer there is the combination of College and Club teams that play tournaments as the Club season prepares for it championship series in the fall to complete the circle. MU Ultimate usually plays 3 to 5 tournaments in the fall and 3 to 5 tournaments in the spring (including a Spring Break trip to Savannah, Georgia), though there is much more playing available thanks to the Milwaukee Ultimate Club. You can visit
their web site here.
"Do I need to buy a lot of equipment in order to play?"
No! All you need is a pair of cleats (no metal cleats), a white shirt, a dark shirt, and some water. Someone else will have a disc or you can buy one for less than $8.01.
If you have any other questions, feel free to email
Michael Wellman.
