Festivals

The Fourth Annual Edgerton Book Festival

This festival onors the literary heritage of Edgerton-area native Sterling North, will be held Oct. 17 at various locales in the Rock County city. The festival is supported by the Sterling North Society, with the Sterling North Award for Excellence in Children's Literature traditionally presented during the event. The Edgerton Book Festival Committee, a group of dedicated local volunteers, raises all the money for the no-cost-to-patrons event through fundraisers, donations and grants.

The theme of this year's festival is the strength of family. Malachy McCourt, who has earned his living from professions as varied as gold smuggling to acting, will speak about his adventurous life, which has been chronicled in his two bestselling memoirs, "A Monk Swimming" and "Singing His Him Song." McCourt, a younger brother of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt, shared the poverty stricken Irish childhood his brother described in the classic autobiography, "Angela's Ashes." Washington state graphic novelist Kurt Busiek, an icon in the comic book world, will discuss his more than two decades as a writer of fantastic tales, including episodes of the popular "Marvels," "Thunderbolts," and "The Avengers" series. Jerene Mortenson will discuss the work of her son, Greg Mortenson, whose efforts in building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan have been noted in the bestselling account, "Three Cups of Tea." Roughly 15 other featured writers are expected to attend, with another 30 or so writers anticipated to participate in a book fair on the same day.

The Sterling North Home and Museum will be open for tours during the Book Festival. 409 W. Rollin Road, Edgerton. 608-884-3151 for information.

Volunteer Opportunities

Reflections Program in the Public Schools Seeks Volunteers

PTA has an arts program called Reflections that will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year. Local units are responsible for promoting this program in their schools and sending entries to state and national competitions. The six arts areas are as follows: * Literature * Musical composition * Photography * Visual arts * Dance Choreography * Film/Video Production Janesville Area Council PTA used to host a local competition as well, and provided support for local units in their programs. However, we don't have a local chairperson and didn't have a local competition last year. If any UAA folks would be interested in learning more about this program and possibly volunteering their time towards local support, I would be happy to discuss the program and point you toward the many resources available from WI PTA. Reflections is a great opportunity for youth to learn about different art forms and to have their entries recognized. Contact: kristin3@charter.net

UAA HISTORY

In April of 1996, Judith Detert-Moriarty brought local nonprofit arts organization leaders and others together and discuss the development of a cooperative effort to establish an arts alliance between the various groups and individual artists. These ambitious individuals met with the idea of formulating an area arts events calendar, mutual promotion of arts activities and the eventual development of a performing and exhibiting arts facility. The group became known as the United Arts Alliance. Early UAA activists included: Judith, Lois Buell, Dorothy Gilbertsen, Virginia Turner, Edie Baran, Kathryn Hagan, David Feingold, Peter Diotte, Jackie-Wood Schoof, and Ted Kinnaman.

The United Arts Alliance is unique in that such efforts are rarely begun by citizen volunteers alone. In almost all other instances, similar coalitions have always been initiated and funded by local school districts, state or municipal governments. In Wisconsin, UAA has the singular distinction of having brought together a diverse group of people with a variety of interests in the arts to bring more arts opportunities and events to everyone of all ages in the community without corporate, government or other municipal sponsorship.

Out of the initial meetings and local surveys of existing arts organizations, it was determined that Janesville had an immediate need for a theatre performance and exhibit space, as well as a place where all arts organizations could have office space, rehearse, educate and be promoted together. The availability of the old Marshall Middle School became the focus of the group's efforts in the spring of 1997 because it already had a grand auditorium/theatre and the building was being put up for sale by the Janesville School District. The United Arts Alliance led in negotiations and organized community forums with those developers who placed bids on the property in the attempt to save the theatre, as well as some adjacent rooms for workshops, arts offices and more. Today we know that facility as the Janesville Performing Arts Center (JPAC).

The leadership of UAA along with the many dedicated volunteers that form the core of the United Arts Alliance, individual members and its organizational members continue to experience growth and the development of arts opportunities for Rock County communities. UAA has demonstrated the experience and skill to take the time, energy and talent to link the arts community toward common goals of growth, partnership and greater opportunities through the arts for everyone. The United Arts Alliance was first organized to support excellence in area performing and fine arts, to encourage participation and appreciation of the arts, and to plan and develop a cultural/civic center. It continues with it's important mission to grow support, appreciation and participation in Rock County arts today.
