Exhibits
Jewelry, Wire Sculpture, and Photography are featured Joella Miller crafts fine jewelry incorporating a wide range of techniques from beading to metal weaving. Many of her designs contain stones such as jasper, topaz, jade, and obsidian. Copper and steel wire is the material of choice for Eilene Coulter. She creates tree portraits and mounts the sculptures onto bases using driftwood found along the Rock River. Alicia Reid’s photography is inspired by themes of natural history and cultural heritage. Using the photograph as a point of departure she extends the image onto the surrounding surfaces using acrylic paint, colored pencil, and ink. The April showcase will open with a reception on Saturday, April 12th from 6pm – 8pm at Raven’s Wish. The public is invited and all three artists will be available to discuss their work and answer questions about their craft. Raven’s Wish, an art gallery and custom frame emporium, is located at 2871 Liberty Lane, behind ShopKo. For information, call Alicia Reid at 608-757-2622, visit www.ravenswish.com, or email ravenswish@sbcglobal.net Watercolor paintings by Carla Day-Johnson are on view this month at the Hedberg Public Library, 316 S. Main St., Janesville. The artist, who lives on a farm in Rock Township, draws her inspiration from nature: wild and farm animals, visitors to her bluebird trail, and flowers in her large gardens. Day-Johnson states, "My father always said if you have a bit of land, you can survive no matter what else happens." The exhibit includes "Woodland Series," a group of 24 paintings depicting the artist's childhood surroundings in northern Wisconsin in different seasons and from different vantage points. Day-Johnson graduated from UW-Stevens Point with a bachelor's degree in interior design and art. She has taught painting and drawing at Blackhawk Technical College since 1989 and formerly served on the art committee at Hedberg Public Library. Also on display at the library is a collection of unique kitchen implements owned by Maureen Birchfield of Janesville. Exhibit items represent the 1920s, '30s, '40s, '50s and '60s, and include potato baking nails, "The incredible cheese machine," Rocky Mountain bean spoon, and kraut pounder, among many others. Both exhibits may be viewed during all library hours through April 30. For more information, call the library service desk at (608) 758-6588 or visit hedbergpubliclibrary.org. DON'T SEE YOUR EVENT OR GROUP? If you are an artist or performer, an arts group, a supporter of the arts in the Rock Co. area or know of an arts opportunity that isn't listed on this site, please let us know. All UAA members are provided this FREE service. We make every effort to make sure all information is updated and current. Your comments and suggestions are welcome!
UAA HISTORY In April of 1996, Judith Detert-Moriarty brought local nonprofit arts organization leaders and others together and discuss the development of a cooperative effort to establish an arts alliance between the various groups and individual artists. These ambitious individuals met with the idea of formulating an area arts events calendar, mutual promotion of arts activities and the eventual development of a performing and exhibiting arts facility. The group became known as the United Arts Alliance. Early UAA activists included: Lois Buell, Dorothy Gilbertsen, Virginia Turner, Edie Baran, Kathryn Hagan, David Feingold, Peter Diotte, Jackie-Wood Schoof, and Ted Kinnaman. The United Arts Alliance is unique in that such efforts are rarely begun by citizen volunteers alone. In almost all other instances, similar coalitions have always been initiated and funded by local school districts, state or municipal governments. In Wisconsin, UAA has the singular distinction of having brought together a diverse group of people with a variety of interests in the arts to bring more arts opportunities and events to everyone of all ages in the community without corporate, government or other municipal sponsorship. Out of the initial meetings and local surveys of existing arts organizations, it was determined that Janesville had an immediate need for a theatre performance and exhibit space, as well as a place where all arts organizations could have office space, rehearse, educate and be promoted together. The availability of the old Marshall Middle School became the focus of the groups efforts in the spring of 1997 because it already had a grand auditorium/theatre and the building was being put up for sale by the Janesville School District. The United Arts Alliance led in negotiations and organized community forums with those developers who placed bids on the property in the attempt to save the theatre, as well as some adjacent rooms for workshops, arts offices and more. Today we know that facility as the Janesville Performing Arts Center. The leadership of UAA along with the many dedicated volunteers that form the core of the United Arts Alliance, individual members and its organizational members continue to experience growth and the development of arts opportunities for Rock County communities. UAA has demonstrated the experience and skill to take the time, energy and talent to link the arts community toward common goals of growth, partnership and greater opportunities through the arts for everyone. The United Arts Alliance was first organized to support excellence in area performing and fine arts, to encourage participation and appreciation of the arts, and to plan and develop a cultural/civic center. It continues with it's important mission to grow support, appreciation and participation in Rock County arts today. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
