Perhaps you know a whistle blower or maybe you are considering it. GOOD FOR YOU!! Yes, it's a tough decision, a lot is at stake and you will need help and protection. Get it fast! Don't go it alone! Whether you're blowing a whistle on a private sector business, non profit or government agency , you will need help and some guidance.

When living in Illinois and being an education and child advocate, the author of this site knew and helped quite a few whistle blowers. Mainly teachers and Illinois State Board of Ed employees. One teacher was Cheyl Mix from East Maine School Dist. 63 in Maine Twp. IL (Chicago burbs). Cheryl blew the whistle on how the school district actively and agressively violated the education rights of students' with disabilities. When she first did this, she did so at a meeting involving a child with autism - I was the child advocate at this meeting and it was the first time I met Cheryl- as soon as the words exited her mouth I knew the hammer would fall and Cheryl was now a target. Now Cheryl was a member of the teacher's Union. Cheryl believed that the Union would stand behind her, what she forgot was there was a lot of internal problems within the Union and as a body they were weak plus their contract was up for negotiations --any Union organizers reading this know what happened there! Cheryl was left out in the cold - I along with members of the advocacy group I started did all that we could to help Cheryl through this hard but MUCH needed time - We knew what she said needed to go public as soon as possible so public support could delay the abuse about to come her way. This is when I met another gutsy teacher who at the time was starting a group - The National Association for the Prevention of Teacher Abuse. All of us rallied around Cheryl because her Union's hands were tied (that's why if you are a Union member GET ACTIVE - Unions are only as strong as the individual members!! Strong active members make for a GREAT UNION!) The public support Cheryl got did help her but had she gained support prior to blowing the whistle it may have gone a bit smoother - So if you are planning to blow the whistle or know someone who is GET SUPPORT FIRST!!!
