|Weekend Holds Fun & Memories For All The 35th Annual Shortline Alumni Weekend was held on September 14-15 and turned out to be met with great weather. Lots of classes held their decade reunions on Saturday morning, while others met on Friday night. The weekend started off at the Pre-Game ceremony at Tom West Field honoring the past Senior Boys Varsity Basketball players. There were over 90 former hoopsters that returned to represent their class and each was given a thermal mug with the Shortline Alumni logo imprint as well as a booklet highlighting all of the teams since 1947 and some Shortline basketball statistics. Some of those who walked across the field were from teams in the 1940s such as Jack Mott, PGHS 1949; Donley Amos, SHS 1949; and Gerald Haught, RHS 1948. Extra "60 Years of Shortline Basketball" booklets were sold at the game and the banquet.|
The Social, held at the VHS Commons, was once again a rousing success. Well over 200 former Shortline students attended and the PGHS Class of 1957 had a get-together there, featuring former classmate, Gerald Courtright singing in the auditorium.
On Saturday, approx. 40 people headed to Powhatan Point in Ohio for the Alumni Golf Scramble hosted by Jim West and Tim Starkey. At 5:00 p.m., it was time for the banquet which was catered by the VHS Junior Class and Mothers and featured a baked steak dinner. Over 300 former alumni were served. Honored Alumni Larry Hayes, RHS 1957, and Alex Wade, SHS 1953 were the guest speakers, along with Honored Faculty Member Tammy Holbert Wells, VHS 1981. The invocation and bendiction were handled expertly by Janet Workman Higginbotham, VHS 1967 and Rusty Nice, VHS 1977. Some award plaques were handed out to the following: "Extra Mile Award" for the alumnus traveling the fartherst went to Bud Riley, PGHS 1949, who came 2798 miles from Fortuna, CA to visit with former classmates. Honorable mention in that category went to Michael Lemasters, VHS 1967, from Littleton, CO; Herman Wilson, PGHS 1958, Hallsville, TX; Helen Haught Fanick, RHS 1953, San Antonio, TX. The "Eager Beaver Award", given to the person that was the first to make a reservation for the banquet went to David Ballentine, VHS 1967, from Export, PA. The "Senior Alumnus Award" resulted in an "Age-Off" between Freda Hall Bell and Edith Coulter Carpenter, who both graduated with the Class of PGHS 1936. When asked which one was the oldest, their fingers both pointed at the other! Finally, Edith admitted that she was 5 months older than Freda, but that she "looked younger", to which Freda replied, "You might look younger, but I get around a lot better than you do!" Door prized of the Fenton Bells were drawn and Kathy Detwyler Hughes, VHS 1977 won the "Old Valley" bell, with Tamara Hayes, winning the "New Valley" one. Janie Bell Beckett won one of the chrysanthemums that were generously donated by Shelby Derby Mason, VHS 1980, of the Maple Leaf Garden Center in Reader. After the banquet, several people stayed and visited at the school until well after midnight. The others headed to the Robert C. Byrd Center in Pine Grove for the Alumni Dance. Everybody enjoyed the DJ and Karaoke provided by DJ Johnny of Marietta, OH.
