Thank You from the Earl Jarvis Family

We the family of Earl F. Jarvis would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation to all the acts of kindness, love, support, food, memorial gifts and overall generosity shown to us by all the communities in Logan during the recent service celebrating the life of such a wonderful husband, father, friend and good Christian man. We are sure he and his Lord were smiling down from Heaven. The memories of the time we shared together will certainly last a lifetime and no "Thank You" will ever be big enough! However, it is one that truly needed to be said and we mean it from the bottom of our hearts! Please always remember the only thing Earl ever wanted for this world was for all of us to love one another unconditionally and take care of one another. So with honor, we will continue to help keep his dream alive and hope that you will do the same as well. Again, eternally grateful ~ The Jarvis Family

Spotlight on Lexington Theological Seminary

(866) 296-6087-(859) 252-0361631 South Limestone,Lexington, Kentucky 40508 / (866) 296-6087 or (859) 252-0361631

About the Seminary

An ecumenical tradition: Lexington Theological Seminary is an ecumenical seminary of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The Seminary values its continuing involvement in the local, regional and general activities and interests of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). While maintaining a spirit that is deeply ecumenical, the Seminary enjoys a special relationship with and responsibility to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Indeed, the Disciples’ commitment to Christian unity is both the historical source and present guarantor of the Seminary’s continuing ecumenical tradition. A particular concern for Disciples’ heritage and future vitality is expressed through course offerings, continuing education opportunities and faculty publications.

We are proud that generations of Disciples leaders have received their theological education at LTS. We also thankfully embrace the wide diversity of denominations and theological perspectives brought to us by our students, faculty, staff and trustees, all of whom contribute to Lexington Theological Seminary’s rich environment for learning and formation. Our ecumenical identity is reflected through our participation in the Theological Education Association of Mid-America (TEAM-A), a consortium of five graduate theological schools affiliated with five different denominations. Students from each of these organizations may take a course or courses with a member institution without having to apply for admission at the institution and the transfer credit process is streamlined as well.

An Attitude of Flexibility

The Seminary offers a unique family of programs with flexibility to meet the diverse needs of people who wish to pursue a theological education. We are sensitive to the unique needs of students at various stages of life: recent college graduates, second-career seekers and persons in special situations.

A Commitment to Well-Rounded Ministry

The Seminary attempts to integrate theological study with ministerial practice and personal faith formation. It is intended that every course contribute directly to the formation for ministry and the practice of ministry while providing a critical foundation for theological reflection and for relating one’s own leadership to that of the church in other times and places.

Heritage of Producing Leaders for the Church

Alumni/ae of Lexington Theological Seminary have served churches throughout the United States and in numerous other countries. Graduates have also held leadership positions such as General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and have served as heads of many of that Church’s general units. Many of the Disciples’ regional ministers are former students of this institution. Members of the Seminary’s faculty and administration have served as leaders of national and world ecumenical organizations, as well.

Congregation-Based Seminary Education

The majority of coursework occurs through distance learning so students remain in their current location. Further, the coursework is explicitly linked to the congregation in which a student is participating. Students go beyond simply understanding the Scripture, theology or how to prepare a sermon; students learn to interpret the concepts being studied for the Church and to apply that knowledge in the actual setting of their congregation. Pastoral Mentors and Covenant Groups Every student is assigned a pastor as a mentor. Students also participate in a covenant group made up of fellow students, a professor and a pastor.

Flexible Online and Intensive On-Site Courses

This new model of education emphasizes both flexibility of location and time. Most classes will be available online. The remaining classes will be short, intensive courses at the Seminary.

New Opportunities for New Voices

The new model offers flexibility to a variety of students, from those seeking a degree to lay leaders who want to enhance their service to the church by furthering their education. It also reaches more students who represent the textured, diverse face of today’s church and the depth of voices needed to shape the church of tomorrow.

Faithful, Accredited Theological Education

Lexington Theological Seminary is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools. Founded in 1865, LTS is the oldest seminary of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), now embracing the newest form of shaping church leaders.

Lexington Theological Seminary does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age or national origin in matters of hiring admission, academic issues or student affairs.

Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

The church is identified with the Protestant “mainstream” and is widely involved in social and other concerns. Disciples have supported vigorously world and national programs of education, agricultural assistance, racial reconciliation, care of the developmentally disabled and aid to victims of war and calamity.

The denomination now counts about 700,000 members in the United States and Canada in about 3,700 congregations. Numerically, the strength of the Disciples of Christ runs in a broad arc that sweeps from Ohio and Kentucky through the Midwest and down into Oklahoma and Texas.

Vision of the Church

The Vision of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is to be a faithful, growing church, that demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and a passion for justice. (Micah 6:8)

 Mission of the Church

This Mission of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is to be and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing, loving and serving from our doorsteps "to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)

Lord's Supper of Communion

The Lord's Supper or Communion is celebrated in weekly worship. It is open to all who are followers of Jesus Christ. The practice of Holy Communion has become the central element of worship within the Disciples tradition.

Disciples' observance of the Lord's Supper emanates from the upper room, where Jesus shared bread and wine with his disciples on the eve of his crucifixion. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the living Christ is met and received in the sharing of the bread and the cup, representative of the body and blood of Jesus. The presence of the living Lord is affirmed and he is proclaimed to be the dominant power in our lives.

 The Chalice

The chalice symbolizes the central place of communion in worship for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The X-shaped cross of the disciple Andrew is a reminder of the ministry of each person and the importance of evangelism.

Congregations and ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are free to use the chalice in publications, web sites and other media. Organizations not affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are asked to obtain permission for the use of the Chalice by contacting:

Communication Ministries, P.O. Box 1986, Indianapolis, Indiana 46206, 317-713-2492, news@cm.disciples.org
