What is the Women’s Studies Minor?

The 18 credit-hour Women’s Studies Minor provides students with an avenue to explore contemporary and historical issues as they relate to and impact traditional academic disciplines and human life. Awareness of and sensitivity to women’s issues have become assets in every profession. Students wishing to elect this minor will need to work closely with their advisor. The course requirements include Introduction to Women’s Studies, Women’s Studies Capstone and four elective courses. All component course selections must be made from the approved list of courses published each semester by the Women’s Studies Coordinating Committee.

The Women’s Studies Colloquium

The Women's Studies colloquium series invites students to explore women's issues with a diverse group of guest speakers. An interdisciplinary approach allows each student to investigate the role women's studies as a discipline has in their own major area of study. The colloquium is offered as a one-credit hour class and is repeatable. The series is also open to the public. The exchange of ideas and experience creates an exciting environment for anyone looking to develop a deeper understanding of women and their past, present, and future.

What are people saying about Women’s Studies?

“I believe discussions in women’s studies courses can help all of us (both men and women) understand ourselves: our concerns, fears, hopes, dreams, and aspirations. If we live in fear and lack understanding, we can accomplish nothing.” ~Dr. Elaine Bartgis

“Women’s studies is not only women’s work: Women’s Studies investigates the ways in which humans have been encouraged to value people inhabiting their lives, the work they do, and their motives for doing it. The potential to recover knowledge and experience lost between the lines that separate the disciplines should be irresistible to any scholar.” ~Dr. Elizabeth Savage

“Whenever I think of feminism, I am more inclined to go down the path of the practice of politics, theatre, life- communal approaches to production; supportive, consensus-driven political action rather than adversarial politics.” ~Dr. John O’Connor

“This insight will transform consciousness as decisively as did Copernicus's discovery that the earth is not the center of the universe. [But] we will never know unless we begin. The process itself is the way, is the goal” (6, 13-14). Gerda Lerner From The Creation of Patriarchy
