All of band camp is mandatory. Plan vacations now. If you cannot make band camp, please do not enroll for the class. Plan vacations AROUND band camp.
There will be serious consequences for those that miss portions of band camp.
Band camp can be an enjoyable, positive experience IF everyone listens to instructions the first time, saves socializing for breaks, works hard, accepts constructive criticism, dresses appropriately, knows their routines/music, and possesses a good attitude.
Speaking of dressing appropriately, NO ONE is to wear pajama pants or boxers as their top layer of clothes. The ladies are the worst about this. Also, do not roll pants or
shorts down at the top, or wear revealing clothing. Gentlemen are to wear shirts at all times. We will have zero tolerance for clothing violations. Multiple offenses will be deemed gross insubordination resulting in immediate dismissal from the program. Ye be warned!
One of the main reasons for band camp is to get the band in shape! The physical demand is the most difficult aspect, not the heat. The heat just shows how out of shape you really are. If you did not play sports because you could not handle the physical stress, marching band is NOT for you. Being crabby, hateful, and showing a poor attitude because you are hot and out of shape is unacceptable behavior and will not be tolerated. Below are a few things you can do before band camp to make your experience more enjoyable.
1. You must be un-air conditioned. Be active outside during the hottest parts of the day. If you get hot, sit in the shade, not in the AC.
2. Start jogging or taking brisk walks for at least 30 minutes at a time. If you get hot, sit in the shade, not the AC.
3. Practice until you are physically spent. The next day, try to go longer. The next day go longer, etc.
