The next new tutor training session will be held September 20th from 9:30AM to 2:30PM.

Here are the answers to a few common tutoring questions:

What do I need to do to become a literacy volunteer?

If you are interested in becoming a literacy volunteer, please contact our office. Volunteers complete a certification training program through Literacy Volunteers of America.

How much of my time do I need to give to be a literacy volunteer?

Tutors are asked to work with his/her student at least once per week for a period of one hour. The actual amount of time spent per week may total about 2 hours once you account for travel time and lesson planning. Tutors report volunteer hours quarterly to the literacy volunteer office.

Is there any additional training I am required to have after I complete my initial certification training?

Tutors usually complete at least one additional training session per year. This is typically in the form of an in-service training session or at a conference.

What happens if I don't get along with the student that I am partnered with? What happens when the student has reached his/her goals?

It is important for both the tutor and the student to be agreeable to their pairing. In the unlikely even that this pairing is not productive, a new tutor will be assigned to the student. Likewise, once a student reaches his/her educational objectives, the tutor is reassigned to a new student.

What type of support is available to me as a tutor?

There are many types of support available to you as a tutor. These include:

  • Adult Basic Education and paid staff are available to answer questions that may arise.
  • Recommended materials and software are available for you to use with students.
  • The Literacy Volunteers office regularly distributes newsletters.
  • Tutors have full use of the literacy tutoring room during sessions.
  • Tutor trainers are available for questions.

Have more questions? Just contact our office and we'll be happy to help!
