BASIC LITERACY Our Basic Literacy students are those whose first language is English. These are students who, for a variety of reasons, need to improve their Basic reading and writing skills. We offer one-on-one tutoring opportunites for these students. The process of becoming a student with our program begins with a phone call. During the phone call, an appointment will be set up for the student to come into the office (in whichever county he or she lives). Call the LVEP Office (304) 264-0298) During the office interview, the student will be asked questions about his/her interests, how far they went through school, and what his/her goals are. The second part of the interview includes an assessment of the student's reading and math levels so that the student may be placed at a level that will encourage learning and success instead of frustration and discouragement. After the interview and assessment, the student will be matched with an appropriate tutor who will call the student to set up an initial meeting, usually in the library or another approved public place. The purpose of this meeting is to become acquainted and to set a tutoring schedule.
