FAMILIES AND THE SYSTEM OF CARE (2 hours)
What do families need to be active, equal team members when working with professionals to meet a child’s special needs? This 2-hour training focuses on documentation, working effectively with professionals in a “system of care” approach, and building on strengths to help children succeed in their homes, schools and communities. Training includes 15-minute video, and a priceless family resource: an individual Care Notebook to help families with record-keeping and care planning.
SOLVING THE PUZZLE: CHILDREN WITH DSM-IV DIAGNOSIS IN THE SYSTEM OF CARE (3 hours)
Three 1-hour video modules with facilitation. “Solving the Puzzle” features clinical perspectives on the most common child and adolescent mental health diagnoses seen in West Virginia. Behavioral health expert Karen Yost covers the basics of DSM-IV diagnosis, Childhood Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, as well as co-occurring diagnoses and the System of Care. The personal stories of W.Va. parents illustrate the unique relationship between children, families, diagnosis, medication, treatments, supportive services – and successful outcomes.
INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PROGRAM OVERVIEW (3 hours)
W.Va. parents of students with serious emotional and behavioral disorders (SED) have worked successfully with educators to help their children achieve success in school. Now these parents share strategies and resources in a three-hour overview. Topics include: Purpose of the IEP, Identification/Referral, Evaluations/re-evaluations, Eligibility, Discipline and Manifestation Determination policy. A handout packet and question & answer session is geared to families of children with SED.
