THE ROLE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) IN RURAL AREAS

To bridge the digital divide, many youths in the developing countries like ours, have no access to ICT and lack knowledge and support. Communication is crucial in development hence, the need for ICT increase in other to meet up with challenges.

In all, the emphasis is on increasing the amount of information supplied and when it would be better to cut down on content and focus more on presentation. The introduction of the Global system of mobile Communication (GSM) in Nigeria in 2001. The GSM private operators increased their lives from 300,000 in 2001 to 1,660,000 thereby making many youths to start their own bussiness of pay phones in the rural areas.

It is believed that nigeria is faced with the challenges of improving the economy, international competiveness to enable her to participate and benefit from the recent globalisation process.

what an IT experience

With regards to making the benefits of ICT available to the people, it is imperative that the government strengthens existing regulatory institutions and provides strong mechanisms to eliminate consumer exploitation and prevent abuses on the part of service providers.

Mounting the dish

In other to help achieve the MDGs, NGO, CBO should collaborate with ICT service providers to help in community awareness and mobilization in rural areas, provide basic services and empowring people to take advantage of new livelihood oppurtunities, empowering people will include attention to health, education, environment, intergrated rural development and youth development has been given utmost priority. The main strategy inlude technology transfer and dissemination.

on the job

On the issue of rural poverty reduction, and youth empowerment, partnership between the public and private sectors has been an important approach.

In the light of the above, We have made arrangement and with support from Blossom Development Initiative (BDI), DEPO computers and GAATS brothers has seen to the project the need for youths and community members to have knowledge of IT in other to help in the change of the communities and also youth empowerment.

In partnership, the ICT project initiated, emphasized the need to acknowlege gender differences, promote youth involvement, respect culture, equal opportunities and promote access to information and care.

This will help youth to contribute relevant policies from their own communities to others and other e-forum of networks with youths from other countries and also stay connected on development and related information to help achieve the MDG.

With the support of other volunteers in ICT, we have tried our best but our success of the programme, came as a result of team work. We the youth are the leaders of tomorrow and our future is in our hands.

Clean Up the World 2008

This year's clean up the world was great as we use the theme to organise a session on Climatic Change and the community, Water and sanitation, Trainings on Good hygine etc. With the volunteer services by the Blossom Development Initiative volunteers, Generation on track in Transit (Gotit) Youth volunteers, made the event a huge success. Also of importance is the certification of participation and voluneering.

We learnt that many still doesnt know much about the CLimatic Change or Glob al warming From the Theme, many now know and also pledge to contribute to the environment protection.
